Think outside the box!

Observer, recognize the "TRNC" on what basis of legitimacy? On the legitimacy of its indigenous inhabitant population's expression of free will, to set up an independed state? Is the population that the "TRNC' claims they constitute its "citizenship" basis, the real and legitimate inhabitants of that part of the world in which its claims to have sovereignty? What about the 200,000 indigenous GCs that were illegally expelled from that part of the country? What about the 150,000 or so thousands of foreign Turkish settlers that was imported into that part of the country? What about it’s ("TRNC") "constitution," that stipulated the assumption that the expelled GC population has lost all rights from that part of their country, including the right to their homes and properties? How can such an entity ever be recognized by the world, while being the product of an illegal invasion and illegal occupation by a foreign country and while also being "constitutionaly" built on the the wrongful assumption of the massive human rights violation of the area's majority of indigenous inhabitants? Are you aware of what you are talking about, when proposing the recognition of the “TRNC” (i.e. the recognition of legitimacy to all the above,) by the Greek Cypriots?

In much the same way as the Western boundary of Poland was recognised after the expulsion of the German population following WW2.

The only problem there is that the GCs didn't invade any foreign countries in the first place. If we follow this logic the GCs should be given a part of Turkey in compensation. 8)

Good idea! Now accept the facts that you’re just an uninvited Ottoman minority squeezed out by the island’s natural selection process and paddle back home…

If your goverment give one milion euros each person there will be not one tc left on island. but reality is if you just left everthing as it was in 63 and not atack you would distroy tcs economicaly and not one left on the island.

I appreciate the sentiment, but not the logic.

Before replying, let me make my position clear. I own no property in the South. The land on which my house is built in the North has never been owned by a GC (at least not in historical times).

My suggestion is based on pragmatism. Like it or not, there are two de facto states. For 34 years (some would say 45) Cyprus has been a mess which no one has been able to sort out. I don't hold out a huge amount of hope for the current negotiatons and even less for any subsequent referendum.

So, rather than try to put right past wrongs, why not start from where we are now? With two legitimate states within the EU governance problems disappear.

There also seems to me to be a better chance of solving the property problem. Those who want to move back into their previous properties will probably be few in number. I would guess that in the majority of these cases it could happen. In the 2004 referendum TCs agreed to hand back territory, reducing the problem. I see no real difficulties in GCs living under a TC government or vice-versa - many of both already live quite happily under a British government. With both 'countries' in the EU many of the regulations would be much the same anyway

For the remainder, probably the majority, who are settled and don't want to move back financial compensation should be available - I can not estimate the figures but I suspect it will be a drop in the ocean compared with the money EU countries have spent bailing out banks.

The Turkish Army would leave as TRNC would be a free state within the EU (Greek soldiers could leave too). 'Settlers' become a TRNC problem for them to deal with - to prevent migration South laws could be passed to limit them doing so for a period as was done by some countries for Eastern countries joining the EU in 2004.

For Cyprus as a whole, with real and recognised equality, I can only see cooperation increasing because of self interest, to the benefit of everyone.

I don't say that the above is ideal, nor do I claim that there are no details to be ironed out, but what is the alternative? Another 30+ years of separation, green line and political invective?
