By John Kaponi

The BBC Top Gear and Sun columnist Jeremy Clarkson has angered the Greek population of the United Kingdom with racist and insensitive comments made in his weekly newspaper column in the Saturday edition of The Sun, were describes Greece as a "toilet".

In an article "Holiday ad cuts a'tache" Clarkson refers to a recent campaign by the Greek National Tourist board in London, were a women is pictured with Clarkson referring "and a girl who didn’t look all that Greek either. She didn’t have a moustache for instance".

Clarkson referred recently to lorry drivers murdering prostitutes and was given a warning by the BBC, but to insult an entire nation in this manner is way off the mark.

The London Daily News has formally written to the editor of The Sun and a formal complaint is being made to the Press Complaints Commission which has strict guidelines over accuracy:

"i) The Press must take care not to publish inaccurate, misleading or distorted information, including pictures.

iii) The Press, whilst free to be partisan, must distinguish clearly between comment, conjecture and fact."

Had these comments been made about Muslims or African-Caribbean’s there would have been calls for Clarkson immediate dismissal in any case The Sun has not made any remedy to date.

The London Daily News calls for Clarkson to be sacked from The Sun for making these comments.

The idiots that were democratically elected to run the TRNC are nothing but a bunch of idiots, they think the solution to the economic crises that we've been in for as long as I can remember is to increase taxes and utility prices.

As long as we are linked to the Turkish economy this will continue.

I pray that the negotiations are fruitful and will bring an end to our long and unbearable sufferings.

Amen.

Apparently he was in a hurry to join the GC’s not too long ago…

Oh my god, get a life mate. I do want to see a united Cyprus and join the ROC economy but surely I can have a friendly dig at my compatriots.

What a silly man you are.

It's more like a dig in the economy you're after...

You could say I want the best for the TCs, and at the moment we are getting the worst of everything.

Turkey go back home and take your YTL with you. You always claim to do everything with the best interest of the TCs in heart, well do the right thing and get the hell out of Cyprus.

Given the amount of racial stereotyping that goes on in this Forum (young Brits = tatoos, earings and too much Keo, ex-pat Brits = pink, whinging wanting to know where to buy Marmite) Clarkson's comments are quite mild :-)

Mind you, Greek lady lorry drivers might start to feel paranoid:

BBC ROW OVER CLARKSON JOKE
'Murder prostitutes' jibe on Top Gear creates fresh controversy for the BBC

Clarkson made the joke on Sunday's showTop Gear presenter Jeremy Clarkson has sunk the BBC into fresh controversy after making jokes linking truck drivers to the murder of prostitutes. Around 200 viewers complained about the gag made on Sunday’s episode of the motoring show.

Clarkson was sitting behind the wheel of an HGV when he said: ‘It really is a hard job and I'm not just saying that to gain favour with truck drivers. That's a lot of effort in a day. You've got to change gear, change gear, change gear, check mirror... murder a prostitute. Change gear, change gear, murder. That's a lot of effort in a day.'

The BBC is already immersed in a row over an obscene phone call made by Jonathan Ross and Russell Brand on Radio 2. The pre-recorded remarks by Clarkson have now sparked outrage from truck drivers. Roger King, of the Road Haulage Association, wrote to the BBC: 'Whilst this could be interpreted as being 'humorous', it certainly is not seen that way by over half a million lorry drivers.

'At a time when the BBC has come in for much criticism over the Brand/Ross debacle, I would have thought more attention would be made to ensure that high-paid TV presenters did not gratuitously insult other members of the working population.' The United Road Transport Union said they had been inundated with complaints from its 17,000 truck driver members.

A spokeswoman for the BBC said: 'The vast majority of Top Gear viewers have clear expectations of Jeremy Clarkson's long-established and frequently provocative on-screen persona. This particular reference was used to comically exaggerate and make ridiculous an unfair urban myth about the world of lorry driving, and was not intended to cause offence.'

I think he's leading up to tell us Clarkson (the bigoted, right-wing, racist imbecile) has found a property in "Turkish Cyprus"

Or they can really get in our good books by posting a picture of the Choirokitian Flag on Pentadaktilos. :D

What a brilliant idea. I am all for a Chirokhitian flag. Come on GR. Lets see you unfurl the new flag of Cyprus.

Maybe the lorry drivers will organize a deputation to visit him and demonstrate the various uses of axle grease.

I think you'll find the lorry drivers found this really funny and gave Jeremy their approval for his remark.

Jeremy is a legend, he has a fantastic sense of humour and is not afraid to say what he feels. Read his books if you want to get to know him, you'll be pleasantly surprised.

Clarkson, whether you agree or disagree with his opinions is a breath of fresh air in a country where everyone is afraid to say anything mildly controversial for fear of the PC and Elf and safety brigade.

I love reading his columns along with Littlejohns in the Daily Mail.

Long live free speech.

Yes BOFFIN thank Lana for "levelling" things for you since she also has noticed you are a complete incompetent. Just as well you now have the Adult supervision you require, to participate.

Funny you should mention him as my mirror image, but most of my surviving English pals are an amalgamation of him (but better educated  ). They too dispense with prejudice, by hating everyone equally.

I read "The World according to Clarkson" and then passed it on to my (then) 8 year old who laughed out loud and has gone on to read various others of his as well as being a big fan of Top Gear etc. Be very afraid when he is over 13 y.o.

Where you fail to be anything like your admirant Clarkson, is in your incessant whining whingeing "woe is me, they said something bad" and "boo hoo hoo stop them picking on me" posts.

Come on BOF, you can do better than that!

Unfortunately, Clarkson has now let himself down (as I pointed out over the page) by demonstrating that he needs his media-fix ... and Oh look, Lana's quote confirms that too!.

Thanks from me too Lana! :D
