It must be acceptable to wear fur since the 'Busby' or 'Bearskin' headdress of the British Guards Regiments are made of such and we all know that the Brits can do no wrong.

Recent controversy about the practice of actually breeding the bears in order to satisfy demand, has led to much research to find a synthetic alternative but has met with stiff resistance from traditionalists.

My own view is that it is quite acceptable in situations where the wearing is not dictated by fashion, there are times and places where it even becomes a necessity to wear it.

Final point, if it MUST be worn as fashion, let those who oppose it adopt a less 'Holier than thou' attitude when speaking or acting against it, it takes all kinds to make a world and one opinion is as valid as the other in matters such as these. IMHO

With today’s technology we can manufacture a whole range of synthetic fibers and textiles making the slaughter of animals for fur totally unnecessary.

As I understand it, there have been many attempts to substitute the material in Military circles, ALL have been rejected as inferior to the real thing for various reasons.

Maybe 'Tradition' is the main reason for rejection, certainly there are strong objections to the general appearance of synthetics which are regarded as cheap imitations.

Perhaps a suitable substitute may be found in due course, meanwhile, if it's good enough for 'Her Maj' it should be good enough for the likes of us.

What possible function do these bearskin hats have, for which a synthetic fur would diminish?

I mean, what do they do other than sit on some head, be it Summer or Winter ... and get stared at or stood next to for photographs!

Now I'm thinking it might not be such a bad thing after all. :D

Opinions please....

My comments are not to be interpreted as a defence for the wearing of fur (particularly in connection with the Military) since on occasions I have also worn it when in colder climates.

The appearance of the 'Bearskin' is certainly of paramount importance to those who resist alternatives and, YES, I daresay the fact that substitutes are so vigorously opposed is for that precise reason.

Are there any 'Ex Guardsmen' among the members who may be a little more qualified to explain the reasons for such adamant refusals to consider change. ?.

I wonder if it can be connected in any way to the manner in which the 'Guards' are required to groom their 'Busbies', each one an individual stamp of the character of the one who wears it perhaps ?.

No need to get excited, merely an opinion, now, where's my 'Davy Crockett ?.

Wrong! I'm not trying to make a fashion statement. I just want a warm jacket.

The jacket isn't even a trendy one, it's a plain parka but with fur on it.

Plus it's made by Canada Goose. Not even a fashion oriented company.

Nothing to do with fashion what so ever. Only want it for how warm it's going to keep me.

PS: I still want it but the clock will have to wait. Kinda figured that it would of been really irresponsible of me if I'd spent so much money on a clock of all things at the moment. It'll just have to wait.. :(

Stop making excuses ... How cold is it going to get in London  that makes you need a bit of fur trim on a Parka!

Admit it! .... It is a fashion statement and the more "practical" and utilitarian the label, the more fashionable it is at the moment (back to basics) ...... You can't fool me!

You can buy a Parka with fake fur trim ......

(As for the clock, maybe you can barter a better price now!)

Fur is leather with the hari left on during the curing process. Refusing to wear furs on so called ethical grounds is total bullshit.

The former environment minister of Canada, who was an Eskimo, told me in a press conference that refusing fur is condemning the Eskimos to starvation. The only natural resources they have are animals. They can neither plant nor farm domestica animalsin their homelands. They manage their animal populations very wisely.

Starving Eskimos do not count for the moral high grounders who like to spout forth nonsense that passes as ethical crap.

So TC, buy fur, wear it proudly, doing so keeps many poor peopel fed and clothed. Bugger the hypocrites!
