How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

All I asked was if anyone has seen similar stories documented somewhere on the net to use for an article... I'd like to get those wankers who are attempting to erect a British 55..59 memorial on Cyprus.

.so you can use it for target practice? On Cypriot soil? :?

Still though, this is the only place for political debates and that’s what some of us are interested in.

Yeah but debate, by definition, needs more than one side. Otherwise, it's akin to an argument with my mother - she's right, everybody else is wrong, and there's nothing you can say or do that can change it.

OMG - Sounds like another woman on here ... she can't be ...... hell no

Leave you guy's to your accusations and recriminations for all your troubles.

Off to bed.

So I start a topic requesting information and all you have done is post sexist comments ... and complain about others!

Go talk to your mummy and learn to have some respect.

(And this is supposed to be a topic you think you know something about? :? )

To add a memory and eye witness account re the British behavior in Cyprus-

We lived very near the historic Antonakis Bar in old Nicosia for part of the EOKA period, it must have been around 1957-58. We were curfewed every night and we could not get out of the house for fear of being shot on sight. The British kept the Antonakis Bar open and "in bounds" ie they permitted their personnel to visit it. So almost every night we watched from our balconies as groups of drunken soldiers and officers would make fools of themselves on the street below. They fought each other, and then with the military police that came to collect them.

It was a glimpse into the soul of the Empire and very educational for us children.

What's sexist about my comments???

All this board EVER DOES is COMPLAIN about others - and your one of the main posters on here ...... go figure.

Why do you ask a question you undoubtedly know the answer for?

Respect .... you don't know the meaning of the word.

As for GR - well his idea of 'witty' repost was to threaten me. Probably him and his 'small man' army of 'five' coming over to 'my BOARD' as I type ..... LOL's.

Must be hard to function with so much hate.

Leave you to it - better things to do with my time.

Wonderful insight, nothing much has changed except that the O R's (other ranks) are not allowed to frequent the same bars as are the Officers, military etiquette generally.

One could hardly expect a young soldier to have much respect for the man he observed lurching in a drunken stupor the night before, regardless of the authority he might have in the cold light of day.

I’m all the “army” you’ll ever need but your board being a placid gathering for the old-age pensioners of Paphos, isn’t worth my time.

Leave you to it - better things to do with my time.

Sure, you've got your Bingo night tonight so better run along and get ready...

Oracle wrote:Amongst the British Army's many "rights" whilst occupying Cyprus in the late 50's, were house-to-house searches. From this I learnt that the English constituents were thieving, hungry, dirty semi-literates  (village consensus) whilst the Scottish recruits were polite, and left things pretty much as they found them. :)

Recently I learnt that the world-famous Nepalese Gurkha soldiers also served in Cyprus.

What role did they play?

How much of the British Army's dirty work did these "Mercenaries" carry out for them?

(Surely by the same logic we should be allowed Mercenaries to help square up to the invaders...)

This is an interesting observation, because it contradicts what many Irish nationalists would tell you. The Scottish members of the brutal Black and Tans (or the Royal Irish Constabulary Resrve Force to use the official name) employed in 1920-1921 by the British had a reputation for being particularly savage.
