Perhaps the 'other' is jelous of the attention he is getting from you. Knowing you is a 'sentence of death' in a way. I think I have just recently found that out.

Oracle, have you any idea how much evolution is taught in Greek Cypriot schools?

The answer is zero! None at all! In fact in every class there are a number of icons of saints and the record stands at 13 which I counted last year in a gymnasium in Larnaca.

Shall we therefore endeavour to fix matters in our own home before putting Turkey on the spot?

I take it evolution is against the Orthodox church then Bananiot. Are all schools run by the church or are there any 'state' schools as such? Would the latter teach evolution?

Evolution is a difficult concept, and not much covered as a separate subject even in the UK (at least until "A" Level in the Biology syllabus).

What is important is that anti-scientific claptrap like "creationism" is not taught as an acceptable, de facto unquestionable only right way life started on Earth.

The problem in Turkey is that this nutter  is threatening litigation left, right and centre, backed by the government it would seem, to silence any opposition to "Creationism".

The Church is trying to run the schools, the Archbishop has said he will call on the children in primary schools to through out any books that the Church doesn't like the contents of.

I can only think he wants to have a book burning, as other notables have through history!

No the church is not trying to run the schools.

But that is the whole point of Churches (if they have a point). They have to actively advertise their wares! Again, even in the UK, schoolkids are offered free Bibles!

I don't have a problem with the "availability" of religion ... what I object to is indoctrination against scientific teaching and that is not something you can blame the Greek Orthodox Church for because even in Byzantium times the Church paid due respect to continuing the ancient Greek tradition of discovery and discussion and questioning!

(Something in short supply on the forum).

Evolution is not that difficult to understand and it is a ridiculous notion to suggest that it is not taught in Greek Cypriot schools because it is difficult. We teach photosynthesis and tissue respiration to the level of Campbell and beyond in the 3rd form in Lyceums and there are no problems with students. However, RI is taught in all forms from kindergarden onwards and quite rightly many children look in dibelief when a teacher ever dares to tell them that perhaps God is not responsible for everything that is taking place.

The Greek Orthodox church plays a huge part in the Greek Cypriot school system. It is involved in everything that happens in schools and the latest ourburst of the Archbishop pays testament to this.

Nothing wrong with the church playing a role in schools. But this should never preclude the teaching of science, including evolution.

But it is very fine for you to be championing the inclusion of evolution, whilst only a short time ago you were telling us how happy you are about The Cyprus Government changing history text books. I cannot believe that the Government finds it acceptable to not teach children about a golden era of Cypriot history. An era where Cypriots actually stood firm against tyranny, and where good men and women sacrificed their lives.

Here you are talking rubbish again. For a start the church, (the mosque, whatever), has no business in the schools. Secondly, the government has never said that the schools will not be teaching about EOKA, if this is what you mean. What the Ministry is doing is to change certain things so that the next generations of Cypriots are not turned into blind bigots, like you and perhaps your parents!
