How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

LEAKING OF INFORMATION WAS ON AGENDA OF LEADERS’ MEETING

The discomfort created by the leakage of information to the Greek Cypriot press on the negotiations continuing between the two sides has been brought to the agenda of talks between the two leaders.

President Mehmet Ali Talat and the Greek Cypriot Leader Demetris Christofias met again yesterday after a break of nearly two weeks.
The President’s Special Representative for negotiations with the UN and the EU Ozdil Nami told the TAK news Agency that the discomfort created by the leakage of information on the negotiations was brought to the agenda of yesterday’s meeting by President Talat. He said that the two leaders agreed to take more care of the issue.
Noting that the talks were taking place in a generally positive atmosphere, he said that the responsibility to remove uneasiness created by the Greek Cypriot newspaper reports lies more on the Greek Cypriot team.
Mr Nami added that he expected to meet with Yorgos Yakovu – a senior aide to the Greek Cypriot Leader – within the week.

Yesterday, the two leaders continued their discussions on federal executive under the first chapter title of the negotiations process; `Governance and Power-Sharing`.

In a statement at the of 3-hour long meeting, the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative to Cyprus Taye-Brook Zerihoun said the leaders started the meeting with a one hour tete-a-tete.

`They then took up discussion on the federal executive and again instructed their representatives to continue their discussions in an efforts to narrow remaining differences`, Mr Zerihoun said.

He noted that discussions on that was followed by a preliminary exchange of views on the legislature, adding that the two leaders will continue negotiating the issue next week – when they are to meet twice, on Tuesday and Friday.

When he was asked why the leaders were still discussing the issue of executive, the UN Special Representative said he could not go into detail.
`There are many complicated issues, you know better than I, and they are moving forward. I can assure you about that` he noted.

TC SIDE WILL CONTINUE TO BE DECISIVE AND CONSTRUCTIVE AT TALKS, IRRELEVANT OF METHOD

Presidential Spokesman Hasan Ercakica has said that the Turkish Cypriot Side will continue to deploy a decisive and constructing stance at the talks, not matter what method is deployed.

The Presidential Spokesman highlighted the needed for more efficiency in the country’s economy in order to ride out the global financial crisis.

Mr Ercakica touched upon the Cyprus Problem as well as the global economic crisis in his weekly press briefing.

He told reporters that the two leaders’ had decided to speed up the process and that the process needed to continue, what ever the method applied would be.

“President Mehmet Ali Talat will continue to do what ever he can to carry on with the process decisively and constructively” he said.

Pointing out that the information leak to the press came up and was discussed during yesterday’s meeting between the two leaders, Ercakica said that the Greek Cypriot Leader Demetris Christofias promised to investigate the claims.

He said the two leaders will continue to take up the issue when they meet next week to see whether or not the leak has been prevented.

The Presidential Spokesman also said that the Turkish Cypriot Side will continue to respect and abide by the press blackout agreed earlier.

Touching upon the global financial crisis, Ercakica underlined the need to give special attention to efficient production in the TRNC.

“We need to take measures that will bring down production costs so as to minimize the effects of the global crisis on our economy” he said, adding that the state needed to do its share to ensure that efficiency in the real economy.

Responding to questions, the Presidential Spokesman also brought clarification to reports in the press that the aides of the two leaders have reached an agreement on the restoration of dilapidated buildings along the Lokmaci crossing point.

“There is no such agreement yet. The two leaders are still continuing to discuss this issue. The Buffer zone is a critical area which needs careful assessment before taking any action” he added.

Replying to another question, this time on the US Presidential Elections, Ercakica said that they desired the continuation of US support to a solution in Cyprus.

“No matter who wins the election, we aren’t expecting a clear-cut change in Washington’s Cyprus Policy” he replied.

Reminded of Turkey’s EU Progress report, the Presidential Spokesman pointed out that the Greek Cypriot Side was trying to negatively affect the report, all which was part of efforts to disrupt the process.

The Presidential Spokesman also stressed that linking the Cyprus Problem with Turkey’s EU accession process will damage the ongoing negotiations process in Cyprus.
