Unless the dog is a priest called Makarios and the hunter invaded some village in Troodos then this has nothing to do with the Cyprus Problem. Go post it in the

"I can't find anything else to moan about cyprus today" thread.

A bunch of English teenagers dropped a dog from a bridge in front of a moving train. Now that would be reason enough to kick Britain out of the EU!

Stop playing silly buggers with these non issues.

Many hunters simply abandon dogs that don't make good hunting companions and leave them to slowly die of thirst and starvation. It may sound callous, but it is actually better if they shoot them.

Racing horses are regularly shot after injuries; so too are greyhounds (or abandoned) and of course Fox-hunting hounds ... let alone the fact that although banned, fox-hunting (one of the cruelest "sports") as well as its many variations, are still continued in the UK.

Once again these individual incidences should not be used to stir up anti-Cypriot feelings, because the UK has a far from clean slate, and it can well serve to demonstrate how these cruel acts are confined to a subset of individuals which sadly are found everywhere.

tim,
the problem here is that the hunter wonders why the dog doesn't do as it is told. but it has never had any training!
they are amazed at our giant schnauzer. they keep asking how we can make her do things.

o,
i know so many people in the uk show dog world and they can be the worst for cruelty to animals and puppy farming .
but in cyprus ,well in the north anyway, dog fighting and cock fighting still goes on.
hubby got invited along to one fight, he thought if he went then he could do something about stopping this shit, but most of the local policemen were there at the fight. so what can one do?
at lease in the uk these people would be prosectuted.

"Many hunters simply abandon dogs that don't make good hunting companions "

That contradicts the charge that hunters swindle other hunters by selling them useless dogs at inflated prices. It also overlooks the simplest possibility, that the dog got overenthuisiastic and got lost.

I guess us hunters cannot do right no matter what!

It is these comments I remember every spring when planting trees (my record is 150 in one day) along with thousands of other hunters and I ponder on the word malakas and its application to my case. Same goes for the money I pay so that thousands of hectares can be planted with poison free food and cover crops. It would be so much easier and cheaper to be an indignant "ecologist" and do nothing more strenuous than occupy the moral high ground.

One fact that might make this thread more interesting- WWF Greece has `17000 paid up members. Of those only 7 have the right to vote for the leaders of WWF. There are no annual general meetings, which leads to the question who exactly empowers this, and other equally undemocratic eco organisations, to act on public issues.

Has anyone here seen the charter of any Greenpeace branch? Does anyone know how national chapters of GP are chosen to sit on the international board? How are the board members of this body elected for a seat on national boards? I tried to find these simple facts but could not. By contrast I can find the most intricate details for the internal organization of major companies.

NGOs receive public funding, often very large sums. What sanctions do they face in case of missapplication of funds through negligence or ingorance (i am leaving fraud out). Are they accountable to anyone? Obviously they are not accountable to their members.

To be honest, I think every country in the EU allows hunting of some description or the other.

Incidents of animal cruelty are also EU wide.

Cruelty to humans, again is common within the EU, but you don't often see examples of this in Cyprus to compare with those we hear about from the UK.

Sorry, I am obviously misguided and should worry more about animals than humans as so many other arsoles do!
