Cyprus Government pleased with T/C participation at Fair
Nicosia, May 19 (CNA) – Cypriot Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides said he was pleased that a big number of Turkish Cypriot companies are participating in the 30th Cyprus International Fair which officially opens here tonight.
The Fair, providing a nine-day opportunity to Cypriots and other nationals living on the island to get the latest news in technology, commerce and industry, includes the Turkish Cypriot Chamber of Commerce with 50 participants, alongside 300 exhibitors who represent 1.500 companies from overseas.
We must break the barriers on trade

THE Head of the Turkish Cypriot Chamber of Industry, Salih Tunar, admitted yesterday that taking part in the 30th Cyprus International State Fair had not been quite as easy as the Cypriot government like to make out.
“The important thing is that we are here,” Tunar said, attempting to play down reports that the path for the 53 Turkish Cypriot companies taking part had been strewn with obstructions.
“We had problems with customs, which I think stemmed from a lack of information on their part about our products,” Tunar said, without confirming reports that the traders had been held up at customs for around three hours before they and their products were allowed to cross into the government controlled areas.
The problem stemmed, Tunar said, from the fact that “some of the products had TRNC labels on them. They wanted us to remove them in order not to upset people.”
Tunar added that where the labels could not be removed, as in the case of on soft drinks cartons, the words “TRNC” or “made in north Cyprus” were written over with black ink.
Tunar conceded that there had also been problems over the amount of space originally allocated to the Turkish Cypriots.
“At first they offered us a 350 metre square area in which to set up our stall, which was far too small. But later they gave us a much larger area, and this we are pleased with,” he said.
Reports suggested yesterday that the government had initially not been keen to have Turkish Cypriot businesspeople taking part in the fair. Tunar, however, denied all knowledge of this, saying: “We had no contact with the [Cypriot] government on this. But I can say the organisers of the fair were keen on us being here. There was a little hesitation at first, but nothing serious.”
He added that he had not heard that Turkish Cypriots were only allowed to take part after intervention by a number of European embassies.
Speaking generally on his members’ participation Tunar said, “We are limited, of course, to products made exclusively in northern Cyprus, so we are rather limited in what we can show here.”
He said he also believed there was an unfortunate “psychological barrier” that prevented Greek Cypriots from buying Turkish Cypriot products.
“Our people go each weekend and without hesitation buy products from Greek Cypriot sellers. There seems to be more hesitation on the part of Greek Cypriots about buying from our sellers and producers.”
