Mrs Ozgur who was born in 1942 was a maths teacher.
She also worked actively at the Patriotic Women’s Union and made many contributions to Turkish Cypriot’s struggle for peace on the island.
Her body was laid to rest at the Lefkosa Cemetery near her husband’s Ozker Ozgur after midday prayers at Ismail Safa mosque yesterday.
President Mehmet Ali Talat and the leader of the Greek Cypriot administration Dimitris Hristofias walked behind the hearse in unison and then proceeded to throw soil in the grave.
Speaking to reporters after the funeral was completed, the leader of the Greek Cypriot administration Dimitris Hristofias said that it was a sad occasion for all Cypriots but especially disheartening for Turkish Cypriots.
‘To lose 2 family members is a great tragedy for any family’, he added.
Also addressing the journalist, President Mehmet Ali Talat said he was deeply saddened by this loss and Mrs. Ozgur has played both a mother and father role.
In response to a question, the President said that both Ozker Ozgur and Zehra Ozgur had dreamed of uniting the island of Cyprus and added that ‘although we have not achieved this yet we are doing everything we can o make this dream a reality’.
He concluded by saying ‘I hope we find a comprehensive solution to the Cyprus problem and their dreams will come true’.
