Why don't Cypriots behave more like Greeks anymore?

Feel free to talk about anything that you want.

Oh I think you knew what you were asking CopperLine!

Don't go all coy and PC now, just because you pointed out the duplicity of a typical Brit for us all to savour .... 8)

Why don't Cypriots behave more like Greeks anymore?

Let's set aside for the moment that this is a crude leading question, and answer it with one possible answer : because Cypriots were not Greeks to begin with. Some Cypriots spoke Greek, some Cypriots spoke Turkish, some Cypriots spoke other languages and some Cypriots spoke more than one of these languages, all varying across the centuries. Equally some families spoke Greek during a generation and later that family spoke Turkish, and vice versa, and other combinations of languages across the centuries. Similarly some families were Orthodox while others Catholic, others Muslim, others Armenian others quite irreligious. All very messy, not at all neat, and never is there a pristine thread through the centuries.

Why does anyone bother posting anything on this forum when Oracle claims to know (a) what they really meant, or (b) what they should have said, or (c) did say but didn't mean.

This forum is simply not big enough for her ego

Woolly!

How far back are you going in time?

There was a time ... a very long time ... when the only language spoken was Greek (of its time!). No Turkish!

Bliss! 8)

Let's not be PC about this. Honesty is the best policy!

There was a time when Cyprus was undeniably pure Greek!

Not as mixed up as that COppelrine. It mattered whether you were a Chrstianos/Romios or a mousoulmanos. Rarely mixed but happily co habited.

I am of the opinion that Cypriots are more Greek than the Greeks. The Greek language that is spoken here (we will ignore for the moment all the non-Greek words that have leaked into our dialect) is much closer to the original (ancient?) Greek than that currently spoken on the mainland.

If you are talking about attitudes, what is traditional about the way the "kalamaras" act now?

Because they never did in the first place! It appears that the Greek methane of superiority has gotten to your head after a brief holiday there, but luckily you’re back in Cyprus now and the swollen head will quickly deflate.
