Religion and Peace in Cyprus

Postby metecyp » Thu May 19, 2005 3:31 pm

Hi,

A friend of mine is doing some research about how religion and religious figures help (if any) for the peace process during or after ethnic conflicts. As part of his research, he wants to examine if religion (both Christianity and Islam) and religious leaders played a positive role in Cyprus problem and how.

Does anyone know anything about this? Any books/articles to recommend?

Thanks!

There is a thread called "beware priests in politics" on the one of these pages if you look you will find it very helpful.

Religion is never helpful in conflicts, especially in conflicts between groups of diferent religion.

Cyprus and the world in general would be much better off without religions.

If you've ever watched the lighting of the holy flame at Christ's 'tomb' in Jerusalem, you'll see that religions hardly practice what they preach. Every year it almost results in fights between the Greek, Armenian and Russian Orthodox priests clustering around to get their torch lit first. If the Orthodox churches fight amongst themselves, what hope is there for peace with the rest. I personally find it a disgusting and sacreligious scene, what does it say to the world to require Israeli soldiers to separate squabbling priests...

It say religion is just another way to divide and rule which has been practised successfully for hundreds of years.
