Moving to Cyprus

Postby Blannie » Fri Oct 31, 2008 12:04 am

Hi everyone, my family and i are hoping to move to the Paphos area from the UK next year some time...i am a 37 year old Tattoo artist and my wife is an accountant, we have 2 children aged 2 and 11. I used to live in Limassol when i was young (1974)as my father was stationed there in the R.A.F, we were evacuated when the Turks invaded :( ...but i dont really remember much about it....we have just returned from a holiday in Paphos, we rented a car and had a good look around the area and loved it. Basically i would like to hear from anyone who may have any advise or pointers especially about the schools in Paphos. Also i would love my own tattoo studio somewhere so any advise on that would be greatly appreciated....cheers.

I would also like to add that we have been thinking of this move for a long time, it's not a off the cuff decision. I want my kids to grow up in a friendly, safer enviroment and amongst people with family values....We want to live somewhere that has a warmer climate, good food and an easier stress free living....I cant think of anywhere better to do all that than in Cyprus.

Well done on your decision.

Get Real is right however, it would be difficult to know where to start with advice so maybe ask specific questions e.g. private or state schools, cost of living etc and do a search on this and other forums as there is a lot of information.

Good luck. 8)

MOVING TO CYPRUS

Postby MACKAM1955 » Fri Oct 31, 2008 8:54 am

Well where do you start i did the very same thing you have just done three years ago funny enough with the same heading, i used this forum for about a year and must say everyone who gave advise gave positive replys, BUT nothing can predict the future , I was lucky enough not to bring children here just the two of us to think of, i cant comment on schooling here but all people who i know here with children pay education fees i dont know if its their choice or not but it eats a big chunk out of their budget. Your a tatooist well i know people who do this and there is a lot on this island like plumbers, chippie, builders, painters etc and its hard to start off here as most workers get work word of mouth or DOWN THE PUB, now what i cant understand is if the wages are poor here which they are how the hell do tradesmen go to the pub 11/ 12 o clock and stay in there all day and dont say they start early cause ive been too long here for that one ?anyway getting back my honest advice you can take it or leave it 1. dont think about buying here rent for a year and decide, we bought my partner has now left Cyprus and cant sell house been on market 18 month. wish we had. 2 bring plenty of money with you ,you will need it its not as cheap to live here as it was, 3 check schooling and fees.4 forget about a stress free enviroment you will have stress in lots of ways, kids ,partner, work etc. 5. relatives if you relatives in UK that you are close to this is one of the major facture people go back and home sickness.6. this isnt like the UK if you get in the shit there is no government handouts here you either swim or sink . This is a personal view of events that have happened to me here in three years as I said at the beginning of this thread NO ONE CAN PREDICT THE FUTURE, but as with all the advice i give i wish you all the best for the future.
no one can predict the future : :o
You were probably laughing too much! :D

In all seriousness tho, GR is right in that all the information you could ever wish for is here...

It is just a shame that (as I have suggested before) all the 'Moving to Cyprus' threads are not moved to their own section - it would provide an invaluable resource for people considering coming here...

Hi, thanks for all your replies....firstly i have done all my reserch on the net, read everything there is to read...i was after personal opinions not facts really.....thanks to MAKAM1955, thats the kind of reply i wanted....its been my intention to rent somewhere probably for a couple of years at least, 99% of people have told me this. I have stress here with kids and other family etc anyway so i might aswell have it in a warmer country. Most of my relatives i dont see much anyway and the others will be out visiting us on a regular basis, my mum loves Cyprus!!!
I have had a Tattoo studio in Blackpool for 10 years. There are about 16 tattoo studios in Blackpool and 6 of them are in the same area...it took a while to build up the trust of the locals here and get a regular clientel, so good healthy competition and hard work comes with the job. I also sell tattoo supplies so i could supply all the other studios on the island at VERY good rates...I know that no one can tell whats going to happen but i have a strong will and im not scared to work hard.
