Help me get the settlers out
By Staff Reporter

AN ELDERLY Turkish Cypriot man yesterday appealed to the Cyprus government to help him remove a family of Turkish settlers from his home in north Nicosia.

Dervlis Niayazi, 74, told reporters he wanted to bring his case before the European Court of Human Rights. He said the house was left to him by his parents who died between 1964 and 1974. He himself was living in the house but later moved to London and rented it out to other Turkish Cypriots,

However he said when they left a family of settlers began squatting there and he has been unable to move them. The police and Mayor of North Nicosia have not helped him, he said.

Niayazi said spoke with Turkish Cypriot television to highlight his plight but it wasn’t aired, adding that he also fears for his life over the issue.

“I want to go to the human rights court to secure my rights,” he said.

This is probably not an isolated incident. How many settlers see an empty house and then move in? I suspect it is far more widespread. It also shows the lack of civility and respect of other peoples property.

How did these squatters get the right permit (or whatever it is) to live there by the 'TRNC' admin if the house was owned by a Turkish Cypriot?? Just goes to show where the 'TRNC' priorities lie and who really runs the show in northern Cyprus.

From what I understand of this story these people are squatters. Squatters do not get permits from authorites - they squat, which by definiton means to do occupy land/property without permission or leagl claim. The owner of the property does not feel the authorites here are doing enough to help him remove these squatters (as onwers of property around the world who have squatters generaly feel the same). I suspect he thinks that 'politising' the issue is the best way of making the authroties here do more to help him and he is probably right. However this is not in my view a polticial (cyprus problem) issue but a 'standard' civil / legal one that happens in many many countires around the world.

Generally I am all for squatting and squatters rights.

Mr Main Source

Come on.

How do squatters get in anywhere?

They probably broke in when the owner was in London. He's come back and now can't get into his own house.( Sounds familiar ?)

I belive the law here says something about two years residence fo statutory right of residence.

Same sort of law applies in UK

If you can find a single land owner in the UK who has had squatters take over the property and who is happy with the response of the UK authorites to this then I will be most surprised.

This is what heppens when the TRNC allows people to enter from Turkey with I.D cards only and no cheques to see if they can afford to be there.
