Ministry officials have on several occasions visited Greece to procure drugs that were in short supply on the island.
The deputy, who last month said he had proof of gross embezzlement of government funds in procurement procedures for drugs, yesterday revealed another “scandal” involving the state Pharmaceutical Services. The head of the department was recently suspended.
Claiming to possess “reliable evidence,” Sizopoulos said that the Pharmaceutical Services were taking advantage of the government’s “sensitivity” in procuring medicines for Turkish Cypriots by asking for enormous sums of money as a supplemental budget.
He said the department demanded from the Finance Ministry an additional £7.2 million for drugs purchased in 2003 and 2004. Some £600,000 of this went to buying extra medicines for Turkish Cypriot patients.
“These figures say a lot, to me at least,” remarked Sizopoulos.
