If you can be more specific as what is the item and what will you do after you have removed the chrome, I might be able to help you.

I will put this request down to the technical committee of our local classic car club tomorrow and see what they say. I know of a re chroming place in Larnaca who can strip the chrome off but the distance is not practical.
BTW writing in capitals means you are shouting and makes it also hard to read. :)

sorry about the capitals, that would be very nice of you to enquire on my behalf regarding the chrome stripper.
if the company in larnaca would be willing to sell me some of their chemicals that would be a fantastic outcome.
i would happily drive down to their business location.
again Kafenes, thank you for your efforts.

I don't think any chemical will strip only the chrome off the steel. Generally, the chemicals that disturb the atom array in a metall, don't forgive other metals.

The chrome was applied trough electrolysis on the exhaust, using a bar of chrome as anode and the exhaust as cathode. By rotating the exhaust as an anode you will be able to strip (some of) the chrome.

Anyway, in order to plate it in gold you will have to do some electrolisys anyway. Why don't you discuss with the guy that's gonna do the plating job? He will tell you that the gold will change color the next 5 minutes after you start the engine ;)

Dragon, there are certain acids which will strip off the chrome but a lot of care and study is required not to damage the rest of the metal. Normally there are other strips of plated metals prior to the final chrome finish which is usually a thousanth of an inch thick. If your initial metal is aluiminium, you can forget the acid. I think the best way to strip the chrome from any metal (presuming the base is not too rusty) would be sand blasting. I will find out more about this today.
