US AMBASSADOR SAYS WASHINGTON WILL NOT PRESSURE LEADERS INTO ACCEPTING AN UNWANTED SOLUTION
The US has said that it will not force the two sides to a solution in Cyprus.
The US Ambassador to Cyprus Frank Urbancic said that neither the United States nor any other country for that mater will force any of the two sides to a solution it does not want.
Urbancic reiterated that a solution in Cyprus must be found by ‘Cypriots’ for the ‘Cypriots’.
In his first statement since starting his duty in Cyprus, the US Ambassador said that Washington supported the efforts of the two leaders to reach a settlement in Cyprus.
He however stressed that Washington had no intention of forcing the two leaders to accept a solution that they didn’t want.
In his statement to a Greek Cypriot newspaper, the US Ambassador to Cyprus said `the United States is closely following and supporting the ongoing peace process in Cyprus.”
Stating that he did not support the idea of pressuring the two leaders throughout the ongoing process, the Amercian ambassador however said that both leaders could be forced to take tough decisions as the talks progressed.
He said that the two leaders will be seeking the US and the international community’s support when the time comes to take such decisions.
Underlining the need for the leaders to be concise and quick in finding a solution, the US Ambassador expressed Washington’s undying support and confidence in the two leaders’ decisiveness and determination to reach a political settlement on the island.
