Armenian and Greek Refugees.

Postby rotate » Fri Oct 24, 2008 9:10 pm

We have descendents of Armenian and Greek refugees in our extended family living in Cyprus, the UK, the US and Canada. Their parents grandparents and g/grandparents all came to Cyprus from Smyrni/Izmir and greater Anatolia regions of Turkey between 1900 and 1922.

I am interested to know if the British Colonial authorities kept any records of these refugees arriving in Cyprus at that time and if so where, if they still exist these records might be found.

Any help given will be greatly appreciated as the kids (some are now into their eighties) are trying to trace/date their family histories as far back as they can before its to late to pass on the information to the next generation.

Thank You

The first place I'd start is the UK National Archive which is at Kew, southwest London.

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/

The National Archive also contains Colonial Office records though I'm not sure whether it will hold the info on people passing through Cyprus. However, if any single archive is likely to have this material it will be the NA. For example, if you want to check people coming into UK between 1878 and 1960 you could try the incoming passenger list at http://content.ancestry.co.uk/iexec/?htx=List&dbid=1518&offerid=0%3a7858%3a0 and http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/news/stories/214.htm?homepage=news

If you (or relatives) are in the UK, then it might be worth using the NA's 'family history' service (online information at http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/familyhistory/default.htm?homepage=fr-more but detailed research is likely to need a visit to the NA itself.

Rotate, one place to start is the archives of the Armenian church. They must have some kind of registry. If that is difficult for you, then send me some names and I will try and pass it on to the right people to see what they can find.
