Why are people reacting so defensingly at what Selena wrote? Fair enough she generalises but she has touched some very important issues that need to be improved upon.

Unsubstantiated sweeping statements like…“they have the most lethal accidents in Europe” …usually do it for me.

get the 2007 table open the excel called Graph a-b-c-d
and check the last sheet graph D

if u dont count russia kazahstan and such countries to europe (why would u) then cyprus and greece is the first in lethal accidents...

feel free to prove the opposite.

We were behind 6 countries in 2004… not bad!

Let’s now look at Graph “C”…

“Number of road traffic accidents per thousand road motor vehicles, 2004”
Image

Oh dear…doesn’t look that bad now does it? Btw, which country did you say you come from?

Come on it can’t be THAT embarrassing…

It is all a question of interpretation. For example, I know from experience that road travel in Turkey is very dangerous, yet graph D would imply that the roads in Cyprus are three times more dangerous than in Turkey. The reason for this is actually the relatively low level of private car ownership per capita in Turkey. As they say, there are lies, damn lies and statistics.

Honey, you need a short taxi ride in Italy, that will fix your attitude about driving!

I go to Italy often on business and every taxi ride is like a heart stress test!

You are either jerking our chains or you have not traveled much.

ok guys i get out. u are pathetic.
Get real: the 6 countries before cyprus are kazahstan and belarus etc..... u are better. congratulations. did u have geography lessons? are they in europe????
my statement was "they have the most lethal accidents in Europe" what does the table say? the same. full stop.

Tim. yes lets do some more interpretation. i dont care about turkey - i live here - however cypriots love to compare themselves to turkey.... people cross the red light here and there too. you are just the same... italians too, but this still doesnt change the fact that cypriots have no idea about driving...

Nikitas. i dont need a taxi ride anywhere. the fact that some other countries have less culture in driving than cyprus doesnt change the fact that cypriots are the (one of the) worst in europe.

thats ur problem generally. you talk and talk and discuss and nothing happens. you started to pick out my language mistakes, my origin, my education, however no one admitted or said anything about cyprus being dirty or not having any culture....
good luck guys...

So Cypriots are useless, so are Italians and anyone else who does not measure up to your standards.

Last time I looked Italy was one of the seven most advanced countries in the world. Just so happens they drive like maniacs too. So the driving is not indication of culture. Some other countries drive very well but have super high homicide and suicide rates, proving again, that driving and such superficial indications are no proof of the general culture of a society.

You obviously have a problem, but it has nothing to do with Cyprus.

Nowhere is perfect.

Yes, standards of road safety are poor in Cyprus compared to Western Europe. On the other hand, statistics need to be interpreted. There is very little public transport in Cyprus and a very high number of cars per capita. People use cars much more here, so statistically there will be more accidents per capita. Limassol and Paphos districts in particular, once you move away from the coast, are very hilly, and this makes the roads there more dangerous. There are a lot of accidents, for example, on the road from Limassol to Fasoula. Poor driving standards are partly to blame, but the way the road twists and turns around the hills doesn't help. It is easier to build safe roads on flat land - I am sure that a flat country like the Netherlands has very impressive road safety statistics.

I like to go walking in the hills when I have the free time, and it makes me very sad to see the way the countryside is treated as a huge waste tip. I went for a long walk a few weeks ago and started collecting all the glass bottles I came across so that I could put them in the glass recycling bin. I ended up having to pick up a cardboard box to put them all in, and had a full box by the time I returned from the hills. At least I was doing something constructive rather than moaning. In fact, I often pick up a few pieces of rubbish in our street and put them in my bin. A few months ago our municipality actually organised a mass rubbish collection initiative. Constructive action is what is called for, not just carping.

So, by all means let us point out where Cyprus needs to do better, but let us do so in a constructive frame of mind.

Driving in Cyprus is like a huge video game where the object is to dodge the oncoming obstacles at high speed, while having a phone conversation with your mate, enjoying your cigarette, and even finding the time to wave hello and hoot to the cop who happens to be your goumbaro! Priceless… :D
