Ah Bir! If the only thing that Turkey wanted is that guarantee there would be no problem! But they want so much more and frequently say so. When we hear that Cyprus is "vital to Turkey's security", or that "the seas south of Cyprus are part of Turkey's continental shelf", or that "Turkey will never remove its troops from Cyprus" the situation assumes a different cast.
Giving in to these demands automatically means that we must bend the other way to accomodate Greece too, and then we are back at square one where the embassies of our three guarantors are the real seats of power and their willing local helpers are busily responding to their masters' voices.
The thing missing is an emphatic demand by TCs for independence. GCs asking for the removal of settlers and the army cannot do it, it can easily be construed as racism or nationalism. Only TCs can do it. And instead of such a demand we see more settlers, more dealings in land. When Talat says that if the Turkish army leaves the GCs will have the TCs for breakfast then we are kind of stuck.
Nikitas,
You will always hear different voices from Turkey, saying different things on Cyprus...you shouldn't take them seriously...There was indeed real change and real opportunity back in 2003/4 with the accent of the AKP and Talat....These two events were related, and for the first time ever there were real will and motivation in Turkey (for their own reasons, and not for just EU purposes either) to agree to a solution in Cyprus...That window of opportunity was closed because people got stuck in petty details and lost track of the real and immediate necessity: Getting Turkish troops and settlers out of Cyprus at all cost...4 years down the track, with another 100,000 settlers in place, and the slow but inevitable Denktashisation of Talat, and the slow and inevitable Militarisation and Kemalisation of the AKP government in Turkey, things are looking bleaker for the struggle to reunify our homeland...
Don't expect an "emphatic demand" by the TCs for independence,Nikitas.
They have fired their best and only shot back in 2003/4 by demanding Peace and casting aside Denktash ...They hate losing their identity as TCs and being ruled by Turkey, but the majority will always prefer that to risking life and limp again as a minority in the present ROC...
