Travelling to Cyprus

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

Travelling to Cyprus

Postby Niki » Tue Oct 21, 2008 7:45 pm

Our nephew plans to visit us next year. He is travelling in Greece, Turkey, Egypt and Cyprus and plans to fly from Turkey to Cyprus.

It reminds me of the fact that people who aren't involved with Cyprus or its 'problems' have absolutely no idea of the division or feelings of some people here (as we didn't until we read this forum) reading only about the fact that unification may be near and therefore opening up the island.

I am not saying this is right or wrong but the fact is the world at large know nothing of the Cyprob and it is easy to forget this. My immediate reaction was concern, is this right, should he be doing this?? Or have I been brainwashed in my 1.5 years in Cyprus? Should I encourage him to do this?

Of course the horrific events of the past in Cyprus can't be denied and I do sympathise but things have to move forward. Opening up the island can only be good for the economy surely?

The way forward is the way towards human rights and legality. Anything else is a move backwards.

Cyprus already has 2 legal international airports as well as sea ports so it is not closed with a need to be opened.

We do not expect the whole world to know the problems of Cyprus. But flying into Cyprus using the illegal airport of Tymbou is illegal, which is why you can do so only from Turkey. I think you should inform your nephew of the illegality of this action.

The reality of situation is your nephew is quite safe and being a European can fly directly to Northern Cyprus and to put it bluntly the GCs can do shit all about it as they have to accept people crossing south without hindrance thousands take this trip every year.

Unfortunately VP is correct, with an EU passport he will be able to come south to the unoccupied area. They won't be happy about it here, but he can do it without problems.

Thanks for the answers.

The free movement North to South is an unstoppable process - people will just have to come to terms with it!

A criminal who commits a crime because he believes he can get away with it is still a criminal.

Would you steal something from a shop or a friend's house just because you believe you can get away with it? Maybe you would, maybe you wouldn't. It all depends on what kind of person you are.

This is not not a criminal offence, it has already been tested in our courts.

A moral offence, yes.

Beating baby seals on the head with a club is not a criminal offence either.

If someone gets caught stealing and the victim decides to press charges, of course thats a criminal offense if found guilty. How's that not a criminal offense in Turkey?
