Has hunting had the go-ahead in the South this winter? Sadly, I read in the local paper here today that despite pleas from environmentalists and some leading Hunters that the November/December hunting season will go ahead despite the lack of animals. Because of the severe drought, many animals and birds have not bred this year and those that did have lost more young than normal. The drought has also seen many patches of vegetation disapear, and with it - animal's hiding places.
And the reason for it going ahead (despite objections) they reckon? Because the government took money from the hunters in the form of tax etc, (for gun possession, hunting licence and a contribution towards breeding game birds) and if they had of banned hunting this season they would have been liable to hand the money back!!!
I am not actually against controlled hunting when game is plentiful - I would be delighted if someone gave me a hare or a brace of partridge, but this is madness - pure and simple!!!
I was particularly saddened to see that permission has been granted to hunt in Karpaz National Park, despite being considered a protected area according to the EU's Natura 2000. God help the Donkeys when some of those idiots get loose in the Karpas!!
