The non-permanent members of the Security Council are selected by secret ballot of the General Assembly and not by the Permanent Members of the Security Council.

A total of five new members to replace outgoing members were voted in to serve the usual two year term.

Lol, the world wasnt born yesterday but you certainly seem to have been. The last issue on turkeys mind for campaigning to join the UN council is Cyprus, it has so many more important urgent issues such as Iraq or its relations with russia to consider that Cyprus is certainly the last thing on anyones mind. As if the whole 'world' gives a shit about the ROC anyhow.

Turkey's election to the UNSC is an interesting occurence. For Turkey, entrance to the 'club' that has sanctioned it is a victory for them, but given that they are only one vote is no guarantee that they are going to prevail in any debate that affects their interests. It will be interesting to see how they do during their two-year tenure...

Well, let's just wait and see. When the talks between Talat and Christofas fail, then Turkey's actions in the UNSC should be illuminating...

Some people in this forum are indeed clueless. The non-permanent members of the UN SC are mere decorative flower pots. The ones that rule the UN SC are the 5 permanent members, which also have the Veto rights on every issue. Greece was also a non-permanent member, 2 years ago. What has changed in favor of its national interests? Nothing! Turkey will probably try to pass some favorable resolutions on Cyprus, will receive a few vetoes from either Russia or France or China, and will eventually step down in frustration, after the end 2 year term!

Turkey, got that seat by providing to the UN, for their service, many troops. The 'image' is tarnished, we know that, and in an effort to restore this beauty, we can hope that the UN will be an influence on her, rather than the other way around.
