OBAMA & CYPRUS

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

The only change we can expect is in Bidden's influence on the presidency. Obama wouldn't know his Cyprus from his fried chicken. Bidden has been a huge ally of the Greek lobby for years and now he's gonna get their full support.

If we have a Cheney style Vice Presidency (which Bidden has condemned) then we're in for an interesting ride if nothing else.
If we have an Al Gore style Vice Presidency then we'll probably get an official visit to Cyprus from the VP but that'll be it.

And if he visits, will he also go to see Mehmet Ali?

Why? Didn't he retire from boxing?

Being realistic palio .... he is probably only the better of two evils .... but I don't think he is intelligent enough to make much difference.

He is after all paying lip service to the huge US Greek community (which is 100% behind the Cyprus issue and we really need them).

The only thing he mentioned about Cyprus was this .....

A Just and Lasting Political Settlement on Cyprus: As president, Barack Obama will show U.S. leadership in seeking to negotiate a political settlement on Cyprus. He believes strongly that Cyprus should remain a single, sovereign country in which each of the two communities on the island is able to exercise substantial political authority within a bi-zonal, bicommunal federation. There must be a just and mutually agreed settlement of difficult issues like property, refugees, land, and security. A negotiated political settlement on Cyprus would end the Turkish occupation of northern Cyprus and repair the island's tragic division while paving the way to prosperity and peace throughout the entire region. It would also give Cypriots a firm foundation on which to build their future after many years of division and uncertainty.

... and we have heard all that before.

In fact what is coming out of the EU is much stronger in our favour than anything the US is saying.

After all, the last bit of that passage reminds us of their ultimate aim which is to see Turkey in the EU and I think this is the calamity for the competitor market of Europe that the US has long aimed for.

Turkey is their missile to destroy Europe and nothing more! (well destroy the Middle East also will please them even more).

.... It would help foster better Greek-Turkish relations, strengthen Turkish democracy, reduce the risk of military conflict, and remove a major obstacle to Turkish membership in the EU.

We mustn't be diverted from our only true ally which is the EU (and the bulk of the individual EU countries). The US / UN have too many ulterior motives which are contrary to what is best for Cyprus.

Oracle, I may not like all aspects of United States foreign policy either, but blaming them for ALL of Cyprus', Greece's, and Turkey's ills is a vast oversimplification of the issue. Remember, there are other major international players out there (UK and Russia for starters) , and they share some of the blame as well. (oh, and by the way, that South Park song 'Blame Canada', I hope will not be mentioned in this forum...).

I have not blamed ALL of Cyprus' problems on the US (and none of Turkey's problems .... Turkey is not an "innocent" victim of the US.)

But the Cyprus problem is a direct result of US, UK and Turkey's geopolitical greed. That is ALL.

im trying to be objective here but i cant for the life of me see how, if Obama was to win, it would be a cause for celebration for greek americans. All Obama has said on the Cyprus issue is the same as what everyone else has said, fair and just settlement, BBF, blah blah blah same shit.
Its not like he said we will remove all Turkish soldiers and the turkish population from the island of Cyprus, because he knows if he wereto say that he would be told to get the fuck out of Incirlik, and Incirlik is more important to him than making US citizens of greek origin happy.
But im glad to hear it makes some of our members happy to see Obama win.

He probably has not said he will remove Turkish troops from Cyprus because this is now an internal EU "affair" ... why should a US President tell Europe he will remove invaders for them, without being asked? It is the EU which has to instigate the expulsion of the Turkish troops; and then if they need help they can and will seek help from the US.

I think what will happen if Obama wins, the US will put more pressure on Turkey to be more flexible in the negotiations. There will be some quiet, backroom diplomacy by the US to shake things up a bit. With the current economic turmoil that is affecting the world, the US will be very reluctant to keep giving Turkey $ loans for example.

It is no surprise that Turkey and the TC's are trying to force a solution by the end of the year, which surprise, surpise, coincides with the change in the US presidency. The Turks obviously feel that their interests are better served under a Republican administration rather than a Democratic one.
