My apartment is close to the Pier at Enaerios in Limassol and every morning after taking tea on the veranda I walk down to the Pier and I feel as if I'm in heavens . I always wake up at 6 am and by 6.45 I'm taking my walk to the Pier where for the last few years I have made friends with an elderly Cypriot named Pambos. In his mid to late 70s but a real character who absolutely loves fishing and does so every single day missing only days he told me when he is not well . I took to the old boy when he confessed that a few years back he lost his 11 year old grand daughter , she was run down at a Zebra crossing by a 20 year old hooligan , who apparently still drives like a maniac having got scott free for killing the girl !!!!
In my June visit this year I saw Pambos again , he had just lost his hook and was busy with a new one while using a rusty rather old pen knife.
Pambos I said make sure you dont cut your self with this rusty chiakkoui , on my next visit I will bring you one , we sell them in my shop . Thank you Kirie Yianni he said , I always called him Pambos but he insisted in calling me Kirie Yianni and I gave up asking him to drop the Kirie.
He offered me some of his catch and I said we will do a swap when I bring him his shiny new Sheffield made penknife.
True to my word in July I brought Papmbos a pen knife and on my first morning in Limassol I made my way to the apovathra . Pambos was not there , I thought , remembering his words , he may not be feeling well.
I searched for him , penknife in pocket , on my next two mornings in Cyprus to no avail.
Returned to the UK and on my latest visit last Thursday , I woke up in the morning and as usual made my way to the Pier , again pen knife in my pocket and looked for Pampos . Alas he was not there .
I hardly knew the old boy but had developed a soft spot for him after he told me of his dreadful loss of his little granddaughter , besides he was indeed a real Cypriot and harboured no hatred for anyone in Cyprus , he was a refugee from Famagusta.
I asked a man fishing at the spot where Pambos would usually be if he knew anything about Pambos , Haralambos he asked ? Yes I said , Up there , he said pointing to the sky . He passed away after undergoing an operation .
I always have my haircut in Limassol by a London Cypriot near by . He asked me to bring him a meat mallet for tenderising his steak , I told him the story with the pen knife , he begged me to forget about bringing him the mallet , will a pen knife do I asked !!!
What a load of old bollocks Miltiades, a bloke like you wouldn't give his shit to the crows !.
You are right arsehole , bet you couldn't rub two pennies together !!
