£1,000 reward to catch poisoner who kills cats with antifreeze

An animal rights group has offered a £1,000 reward to bring a serial cat killer to justice.
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (Peta) has stumped up the money for information leading to the prosecution of the poisoner who has killed 28 cats since April.
It follows an investigation launched last month by the RSPCA and police into the poisonings, in which pets were feed with antifreeze and left to an agonising death from kidney failure.
Nine pets in Weston-super-Mare - six of them in the same street - have died as a result of attacks in the last two weeks.
Between April and August, 19 cats in nearby Bridgwater died after suffering vomiting, diarrhoea and fits, caused by ingesting ethylene glycol - the agent commonly found in anti-freeze.
Cats are attracted to the sweet taste of a chemical present in antifreeze.
Christopher Black, 25, of Weston-super-Mare had his pet Smudge put down after it started having fits and crying out in pain.
He said: 'I'm a grown man but I cried for at least three days over it. I find it horrible to think anybody could do that kind of thing to a loveable little animal.

'There must be something seriously wrong with anybody who gets their kicks from poisoning cats.'
Peta is also urging residents to keep a watchful eye on their animals and to keep all cats indoors.
Spokeswoman Suzanne Barnard said that animals are the perfect 'practice' victims for people who enjoy violence and cruelty.
'Research in psychology and criminology shows that people who commit acts of cruelty to animals often go on to commit violent acts against their fellow humans,' she warned.
'As long as the perpetrators of this crime are at large, other animals in the area - and human residents - might also be in danger.'
She added: 'Animal abusers are cowards. They take their issues out on the most defenceless beings available to them.'

first of all obviously Cypriots are not the only ones then ......... and Cypriots are not all the same either...........

Second of all If you are against bird hunting and accuse Cypriots for doing it STOP EATING the ampelopoulia, thats an act of not approving i think.
and finaly I also agree that 'Animal abusers are cowards. They take their issues out on the most defenceless beings available to them.' and i also want to add that cowards are also people supporting animal abusers in any possible way no matter what nationality they are.

Can you still get ambelopoulia in the RoC? I thought that they were now available only in the north. Mentioned it to one of the campaigners and his response (on their site) is that they are not concerned with the political problems of Cyprus, only with the welfare of the birds.

Went to the Medrano a long time ago when they were in Athens. For an extra charge it was possible to visit the animals in a side lot. The tigers and lions were in excellent condition, with shiny coats and no sign of physical abuse. It was a unique experience to touch a full grown tiger and lion.

This is not to excuse or approve circuses. But the truth is far from the lies concocted by animal fanatics. What are the plans for the animals if they are confiscated? Will they be rehabilitated or put down by authorities that have no way to keep them alive?

You can still get ambelopoulia in some places, but not openly and you would probably need to be with someone known to the management.

Have any of the schmucks who campaigned to stop ambelopoulia catching done anything about the destruction of ambelopoulia habitat through "development"? It seems like they managed to stop the catching but do not give a flying f***k about the survival of the birds themselves.

No, they are the new species in the habitat, whinging Brits who now that they are here decide they don't like it and we have to change because we are "Europeans" now!

keeping any wild animal locked up for profit is bad in my book.
cats and dogs are domestic pets, but wild animals should be left in their natural habitat.

i know lots of cypriots who love and care for there dogs.
there are some which don't but instead of having ago at them, its just as easy to give advice and try to educate them.

the message needs to be sent out load and clear from primary school upwards!

Even if we thought we were caring for these animals by giving them food and warm shelter .... we are still behaving in an unethical way.

Tantamount to practicing slavery.

There are good Masters and bad Masters but any number of good Masters does not justify continuing Slavery.

We should learn from the past and not now start breeding animals purely for show and profit, as we did with dogs and domestic agricultural breeds.

For the benefit of this species and many others we turned Paralimni into a concrete wasteland. Just think what it would look like if it was managed for a sustainable ambelopoulia harvest!
