Does your IP address reveal your whereabouts?

There’s been some commotion lately about an IP address giving away someone’s location but the truth is your IP address is randomly selected from a HUGE ARRAY of addresses assigned to your Internet service provider (ISP) so the best case scenario for the person trying to track you down is to use a third party online utility like “where is” or whatever its called these days, to get some general idea of your geographic location such as “CYTANET Cyprus” or something like that.

Big deal!

PS: Your home address is irrelevant to IP addresses.

Regards, GR.

But remember, before anyone goes all "Gary Glitter", your ISP knows exactly who has which ip address, so they can trace you very easily!

True, in the case of crime investigation by local authorities. They can get a court order to force the ISP to surrender your details.

Or you can bribe someone at CYTA, as happened with mobile phone information a little while ago.

Or get a job there yourself, as far as I can see the only qualifications you need are that you are ignorant and unhelpful.

Dont know what program is that but a friend of mine in UK told me that he could find out the address through emails. Since I am not an expert on computers I cannot really explain how. . . even though he did explain to me. He also could tell when I open the email and for how long I had it open.   Who can trust computers or internet these days?

The IP of the sender is always in the headers of the email. You just need to look at the headers ;) Basically you send your IP whenever you connect to another computer like a webserver to get a webpage or the PC of somebody else when you chat. The other computer needs to know your IP address because that is the address the information is send. So basically when you are online and you surf the web, chat or do any activities you send your IP to others. If you want you can use a proxy to hide your real IP but proxies can slow down your connection and cause other problems and there is no need to use them unless you are doing something illegal and you want to hide your IP ;) But even with many proxies you are not 100% safe anyways ... So just don't worry about your IP. What you should worry about is to have a good anti-virus a good firewall and to know what phishing is so you will not be phished!

They will find you, no doubt about that.

ISP's in UK are clamping down on heavy downloaders. Anyone caught will have their internet taken off them.

They (the providers) have their ways I can assure you.
