In the Northern outback - Australia; the weather forecast is always announced by the elder. The secret of the broadcast was never passed down to the new elder.
The people would ask him, "how is the winter going to be this year?".
He would say, "it going to be cold, gather in your wood now for the winter fires to keep you warm".
As winter approaches, they consult the 'elder' again, this time he says, "its going to be very very cold, gather as much wood for your winter fires as possible".
Winter is now around the corner, leaves are falling off the few trees, but still not cold and they approach the elder again. He says," wait a minute". He finds a phone box and rings up the meteorological office and asks them what the winter will be like.
The Ozzie meteorological officer says," How the Ph--- do I know, but from what we gather from our satelite data, the Aborigines are gathering plenty wood, which always means a very bad winter".
I heard it on LBC Steve Allan show, this morning and nearly crashed the car laughing.
