Bringing a British registered car into Cyprus

Postby maintainence engineer » Thu Oct 09, 2008 8:35 pm

I would like to bring my estate car to cyprus, in order to seek work as a maintainance engineer ( with my air-conditioning tools etc )
Obviously I am aware of the problems of the north ( as a child I lived in limassol 1971 - 1973 ).

Not wishing to cause offence, my problem is this-

To drive from the UK to cyprus, the only route seems to be through eastern europe, Turkey & then the ferry to the north of the island, would crossing from north into the south via one of the official border points be deemed unrealistic or criminal even ? My car is very reliable, has air-con & I trust it fully, shipping it to Cyprus looks expensive & time consuming.
Also if things work out what kind of cost/time would be involved at a later date of registering my car as cypriot. ( 1999 Vauxhall Astra estate ).

many thanks to anyone who can respond !

Your car is not far off being 10 years old  ... that is way too old to bring to Cyprus! 8)

I can't advise on your route or the legalities of driving from north to south, however as far as registering your car in cyprus try this sitecyprusdriving.net/index.php

you can get a car ferry from italy to cyprus its about 700 euro's for a car and person depending on type of cabin the company is called grimaldi, they have a website with dates and prices, import tax and registration cost depends on the engine size but i think (not sure) but work vehicles get some kind of discount but if you do bring it over there are port charges to pay before you can get your car out of the port

... but we are here to offer him advice :D

I think he should simply fly over and either ship his car plus tools over or ditch the car and ship the tools over then buy a car here ....

I may be wrong! (but that would be a first 8) )

lol good point i was just offering a different point of view i saved alot by driving it to italy then the ferry than buying the same car here or shipping straight from england and got to see some of france and italy, although i'd advise him to blast through france and spend more time in italy, like i said his choice

I think someone should point out to him that the Turkey to Kyrenia route is a definite no no.

You would have no chance of getting you car registered here if you arrived through the occupied areas.

There again, if you got through the border without being checked (quite possible) you could probably drive it around forever on the UK plates!
