The Head of the European Council’s Local and Regional Administrations Congress Yavuz Mildon has emphasized that important responsibilities falls upon local administrations for a settlement in Cyprus.
Mr. Mildon met both with President Mehmet Ali Talat and the Greek Cypriot Leader Dimitris Christofias in Strasbourg last week.
In a written statement, Yavuz Mildon expressed support to President Talat in his efforts towards bringing about peace in Cyprus.
Stating that President Talat has asked him to help for the implementation of the 170 resolution by the Congress, he noted that the resolution envisages one of the three seats belonging to Cyprus at the congress to be allocated to a Turkish Cypriot representative chosen by the North Cyprus Municipalities Union.
‘I expressed the wish for a solution in Cyprus during the meeting with the Greek Cypriot Leader Dimitris Christofias and I asked for reduce in the number of military and the cancellation of military exercises on the island’ he added.
Mr Mildon also announced that he is planning to pay an official visit to the island by the end of the year.
