Driving from Cyprus to England?

Postby hellopaul » Tue Oct 07, 2008 10:04 am

We are thinking of driving from South Cyprus to England. With our dog. I assume the best way to do this would be to get a ferry from Kyrenia to Mersin (Turkey) to drive the 4000-odd km through Europe.

Has anyone had experience of this? Any knowledge of dogs on ferries? What are the borders of Bulgaria/Croatia/Serbia/Slovenia like in terms of customs officials etc?

Any advice would be most welcome!

Cheers,
Paul

I hope it is a one-way trip because if you come back you will have problems regarding your car which will have been illegally exported from the island.

Paul,

I've done the driving trip to and from Cyprus, arriving into and departing from Kyrenia, if that's any help. Hull-Rotterdam/Zeebrugge-Blelgium - Netherlands - Germany (overnight stay Nurenberg) - Austria - Slovenia (overnight stay Novo Mesto) - Croatia - Republika Srpska/Bosnia - Serbia (overnight stay Belgrade) - Bulgaria (overnight stay Plovdiv) - Turkey (overnight stay Istanbul and Karaman) - Tasucu - Kyrenia. You'll be dojng it in reverse and from the south there are other options, but I found this way works well. An amazing family journey and great fun.

You'll need an international drivers licence, green card from your car and insurance for non-EU territories including Croatia, Serbia, Asian Turkey and the north of Cyprus. Stick to the speed limits, try not to drive much at night and take small presents for kindnesses you will encounter on the way. Good luck with it.

Seems unfair to keep the dog cooped up in a car for so long.

Anyway, presuming you have a pet passport (micro-chipped dog, rabies vaccinated) when / if you get to France you will need to have the dog treated for ticks etc. by a vet, 24 to 48 hours before final departure for the UK.

I did this a long time ago but in a coach… Limassol > Pireas > Thesaloniki > Yugoslavia > Italy > France > and then Calais to Dover via hovercraft… very troublesome and tiring and we didn't even have any dogs! :?

Was this when you were a kid? How often did you have to stop and feed the horses?

Drove from here to Italy in my diplocabino 20 odd years ago, when there were ferries between Limassol and Pireaus. It was a laugh.
