Do village or Town rivalries exist in Cyprus?

Feel free to talk about anything that you want.

And ,apparently they come from Texas :?

I think I saw the St Nicholas "Texas" guarding the huge bonfire next to the eponymous church in the days leading up to Easter. They did not look like young gentlemen that one would wish to get on the wrong side of. It was all in vain, however, because a couple of days later I saw footage on the news of the authorities dismantling this bonfire.

The rivalry is between Nicosia and Limassol because Limassolians have now gone so far as to demand the capital be moved from Nicosia to Limassol. (They should stick to the carnaval). Larnaca doesn't count for much and paphos is a separate country so its got a bone to pick with everyone.

Should Limassol stick to the carnival, or should it continue to act as the main commercial centre of Cyprus that generates all the wealth which in turn keeps the bureaucrats in Nicosia behind their comfortable desks?

I would be very happy for them to make Limassol the capital and move all the Ministries down there, the traffic situation in Nicosia would be much better.

Main commercial centre? I think you'll find that in this service industry economy banks are king....(until recently they were at least  )

64% of the islands GDP is generated from Nicosia.

I thought tourism was the largest contributor to GDP?

We don't get much of that in Nicosia (thank God).

I dont know about rivalries, but as youngsters we would hear our elders talk of the beautiful girls and Turkish delights of Lefkara, the thieves of Aradipou, and the Eokacis of Limasol.

The most beatiful girls I saw were Armenian girls of Nicosia and Trahona (north of Nicosia.) At least we could talk to them in Turkish and English. I never knew any Turkish chat up lines as it was impossible to even say hallo to a TC girl. Thankfully all is changed now.

Seeing the recent photos of camels on the larnaca-Nicosia road, reminded me of the Aradipian highwaymen (on donkeys perhaps).

My gut feeling is that most of the island's GDP is generated in Limassol. I hope to dig up some evidence soon to support this claim.

It could well be that the figures are skewed because the banks' head offices are in Nicosia. Most of the banks' most lucrative business is surely generated by the 130 major shipping companies and other offshore companies in Limassol. It may be that because a few bloated officials at bank head offices get to shuffle some papers on their desks in connection with these transactions that the business is chalked up to Nicosia, so that the latter is credited with creating wealth that actually originates in Limassol.
