I realise this is not a competition, but I must insert Poland. Always the forgotten one, Polish people gave so much for very little or NO return.

Good to see several of you have had a good service in the NHS. London has a lot more resources per head of population in terms of hospitals, waiting times etc. Basically the problem is a postcode lottery, with areas like Wales, Scotland and North England experiencing a lot more difficulty accessing non-urgent healthcare. By and large emergency services here are excellent, e.g. if you are having a heart attack or need your appendix out, but the people who suffer are those who are waiting for outpatient appointments for more chronic, not life-threatening conditions. A severe chest infection (like you had Zan) which is not responding to treatment would be classed as potentially life-threatening. Also cancer and Alzeimers services seem to be lagging behind the rest of Europe/US etc. I thought the Australian healthcare system was absolutely fantastic when I worked there, you can get an MRI or ultrasound scan on the spot. I'd like to work in Cyprus, but so far my impression is that there isn't a great demand for non-Cypriot docs.

While it is governments rather than some of its people being talked about here I agree that Poles were fantastic with many thousands remaining in the UK after the war.

One such character living in the same village as me has recently died but never managed good English skills with two words out three being based on the same F word.

Here are the other Europeans (along with Greece and Cyprus):

France, Denmark, Belgium, The Netherlands, Norway, (Italy post '44), Ireland, Wales, Scotland, European Russia ...

(We won't bring up the rest of the Nations  )

This is hardly most the MOST of Europe , helping the Brits, to which
you referred.

Having read some of your comments on the forum I am not surprised that despite you living in Scotland you are apparently unaware that Wales and Scotland are part of Britain.

This leaves the list somewhat shortened. Taking off Ireland which was neutral reduces it further.
Belgium I agree with but Norway, Holland and Denmark were not liberated until a few days before the end of the war although though they did have brave resistance members.
The Free French were certainly a strong force.
You missed out Malta.

Russia which had assisted Nazi Germany militarily against Britain
was certainly very much involved but only after it was invaded by Germany.

Considering you sabotaged a reply to another, just to accuse me of falsifying information, that is an exhaustive enough list to re-educate you that Churchill's England (please do not get England and Britain mixed up) were not the only ones fighting the war (since that was the discussion in which you jumped into).

Yes this was a good list of most of Europe (do the population statistics yourself), although no doubt not exhaustive, but enough to qualify my statement. And yes a number of other Countries fell under occupation to the Nazis and their resistance also helped the Brits, to win the War which you were doubting was won along with the help of others .... and as I said ... I won't bring up the other Nations that also helped).

While many countries played their part in fighting the Nazis, in the end I believe the that victory for the Allies can be attributed to the technology and industrial muscle of the US and the enormous manpower of Russia, who lost up to 27,000,000 of its citizens.

Yes, but Lana ... Mr T says Britain did it all on her own

I am convinced the surreptitious Turk (Mr T) is just out to make the Brits look so ridiculous that us GCs (Russian-GCs) appear unfriendly towards them, by responding to his outrageous posts (suggesting they are something they are not!).

Most right-minded Brits agree with us 100% .... :D

NO RETURN????

You might be right, but their children and grand- children have swarmed to the UK to take advantage of our Benefits. The women come over, have babies, claim child benefit and then go back to Poland. They know how to get Government hand out`s that I never new existed!

When I was made redundant in the UK 4 years ago I was fortunately waiting for the sale of my house to go through to return to Cyprus. When I visited the dole office for my paltry 50 quid a week (even though in the previous 6 years I had paid over 70K in in taxes and NI), I never saw any Poles there, it was mainly young teenage girls with a couple of multi-coloured kids and there current teenage boyfriend fullfilling there ambition of living off the state.
