The fatal mistake was for Grivas to return to Cyprus .
He had achieved almost all that he wanted bar Enosis. The British had been forced to accept an independent Cyprus and their rule coming to an end . He grossly underestimated the consequences of his return to Cyprus against the advice and wishes of President Makarios who after all was the legally elected man in charge.
The rest is history , can anyone now be in support of Grivas's return to Cyprus ? Doubtful with hindsight.

[quote="yialousa1971"] "raised the people’s fighting spirit and drove men, women and even children to acts of self-sacrifice for the ideal of freedom" [quote]

I was somewhat intrigued by this particular snippet contained within the historic presentation of the life of 'General Georgios Grivas'. (also affectionately known as 'The Old Fox')

I do wonder if the period which 'Raised the Spirits' might be the same one which saw the departure from our shores of Miltiades (scuttling for cover) when he chose to live in the land of his country's foe ?.

So that you understand son , here is the true story for the umpteenth time after which I shall do the proper thing and ignore you.
I took part in the liberation struggle as a member of ANE . My older brother was an EOKA active member who took part in action.
I left Cyprus in 1961 just as thousands of other Cypriots did. Don't be a stupid sod all your life grow up and act sensibly , now shut up and get out of my face Plonker.

Every man woman and child in Cyprus took their stand at the time you mentioned (save those who departed of course).

Of all those who also joined the apparent 'Exodus', YOU appear to be the only one who now so adamantly insists on embracing whatever proposals/agreements/solutions are being aired at any given time by any source providing they are members of your chosen gang of three (or four, forgot the Turks momentarily) which entirely negates ALL your feeble protestations and opinions.

You left your family in the firing line, departed to save your own skin and now wish to validate (after fifty years in the camp of the foe) your claim to be recognized as a Cypriot.

General Floyd Daniel Muldoon has a piano wire reserved for you mate , you should have waited a little longer and moved a little further North from the village that spawned you, that way, you could have spent fifty years on the other side of the 'Green Line' (courtesy of the Brits) and who knows, you may now have been as good a 'Turk' as you obviously are a 'Brit'.

Not too much difference when you consider the readiness of each to inflict suffering and hardship upon defenceless victims of their aggression. (IMHO)

"Oh I see",  YOU being well up the front of the queue I suppose, so glad you weren't trampled in the rush.

So, may I ask the obvious question, what has Cyprus (and it's predicament) got either to do with or thank YOU for?, since by your own admission, you made a 'Better Life' for yourself among those who made life in Cyprus so intolerable and eventually managed (by their cunning plots and conniving practices) to destroy it (or at least ensure that Cyprus would be in such predicament upon the culmination of their involvement).

Fifty years of absenteeism (apart from the several visits when/and now that the coast was/and appears to be clear) certainly would suggest that such activity was either abandonment or even more distasteful 'Spying', particularly since you would have been 'In Your Prime' at the time of the invasion, one wonders if the fear of a little military training had anything to do with your keeping your head down, OR, was it fear of capture and possible incarceration (or piano wire treatment )
