It is time the Cypriots faced the fact that animal welfare is a virtue that civilized nations have and that in Cyprus it is a national disgrace that we have to rely on the Brits to take care of strays and EDUCATE us in animal welfare.
Cruelty to animals in all of Cyprus is endemic and it is accepted by society at large as the normal way of treating animals. Oracle was quick to pour scorn by pasting articles depicting animal cruelty in the UK and other parts encouraged by the Chief Plonker , and you all know who that is , The difference here Madam scientist is that animal cruelty in CYPRUS is partly accepted as the norm where in the UK and other civilized societies it is considered WRONG and its frowned upon by society at large. The same mentality that viewed the recent suicide attack in Pakistan that sprung to the "defence" of the sick perpetrators by reminding us the Americans also "killed" innocent people to is shared by our two Plonkers !!

Yes , there is cruelty to animals in Cyprus and yes we have to accept it and do something about it.
Well mates , I'm back , it seems you cant get rid of me , oh incidentally your interpretation of the Paphitis / Miltiades poll is rather amusing but flawed in the fact that our Chief Plonker added a couple of votes not recorded and omitted to deduct the 5 from him , and 4 from Oracle !! The poll was declared null and void and although the final result which included the 9 rigged votes showed Miltiades to be the winner , it did count and I appealed to Paphitis to return to the forum , he did briefly expressing his " indignation" at having forced Miltiades out !!!!
I had a weeks brake in order to concentrate on other matters and to plan my next trip to Cyprus this coming Thursday the 9th .

I did not pour scorn, I expanded the thread to make it a global issue which I consider it to be. The problem of animal cruelty will not go away unless we find that common link which all people have, which produces a subset of Humans who enjoy sadistic acts.

You are also wrong that animal cruelty is accepted in Cyprus .... it is as much frowned upon, and words of disgust expressed as anywhere else. It just does not become the obsessed topic of conversation amongst people as it is in the UK.

That does not mean that animal cruelty does not happen in the UK.

But things are easier to hide in the UK. Neighbours barely know what is happening to the old people in the community or the number of abused children ..... so how could they be so well informed that they assume they do not have rife animal abuse behind their closed doors and non-communicative cul-de-sacs.

You are , as always , missing the point here mate.
This is to do with Cypriots perception of what constitutes cruelty to animals , the fact that cruelty to animals is also evident in other countries does not in any way affect the animal welfare issues that our nation has to address.
Two wrongs do not make one right and the fact remains that in Cyprus a great many people have no regard to animals feelings.
May I also state how proud I'm to have my head wedged up in a royal arse as against your head which it is obviously firmly embedded in an Arabs dirty arse !!!

Get Real! wrote:Animal cruelty: can we always lay the blame at the door of Cypriots?

"All too often we come across animals that have suffered at the hands of Cypriot people. The British along with other Europeans shake our head in despair while patting our backs and feeling superior. No way would we treat animals in this way. We are animal lovers. We all work very hard to help animals in distress. We spay our animals; take them to the Veterinary when they have pain, vaccinate them. We then ask ourselves why can’t everyone behave like us. We wouldn’t need dog and cat shelters if everyone behaved responsibly. Would we?

Well have I got news for you!
Having worked in animal rescue for the past five years in Peyia/Coral Bay and being a founder member of Parc (Peyia Animal Rescue Club) I am in despair with the number of irresponsible people who come to live here, take an animal, and cause them horrendous suffering when they desert him.

A tremendous number of people are coming to live in Cyprus and then returning to the UK when things go pear shaped. They live here for a short while, believe everything is great, get themselves a dog or cat and then find out it is not easy living in Cyprus particularly if one needs to work for a living.

With all the other problems to deal with the poor animal quickly becomes bottom of the priority list when cases have to be packed. The little dog or cat that was shown lots of love when they were chosen as babies often find themselves tied up outside the refuge or just turned out on the streets to survive as best they can. Almost daily I am asked to help with cats that have been left. Yes free cats survive in Cyprus, they can hunt and the weather is usually kind. However, there is nothing more cruel than taking a free cat into a house, making him domesticated and then when he has become used to two meals a day and a warm bed, turning him out. Almost always the Brit that is leaving Cyprus will be grief stricken. I have heard all the stories."

If we were to plot a graph of rising levels of abandoned animals and the fluctuations in the British population of Cyprus, might we perhaps see a close correlation ....
