How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

Cyprus: "We do not have the luxury to fail" warns President Dimitris Christofias

[30/09/2008] “We envisioned a Cyprus where any conflict between the communities will, in the context of a united economy, be replaced by healthy competitiveness and an alignment of interests between the various classes of the population, irrespective of which community they come from,” the President declared on 30 September in his speech to the Parliamentary Assembly. President Christofias stressed the “common vision” he shares with Mehmet Ali Talat – the leader of the Turkish Cypriot community who will also address the Assembly on 1 October ahead of a debate on the situation in Cyprus. He added: “I believe that we can and must succeed.”

Part of Christofias's speech

Personally, I am someone who in the past has resisted and fought chauvinism. I am glad to say that in the noble struggle we waged as fighters of the Popular Movement of Cyprus, I fought alongside the present leader of the Turkish Cypriot community, Mehmet Ali Talat from the beginning of the ‘80s. This more than anything else gives me hope that we can succeed in finally reaching an agreed solution that will serve the interests of Cypriots and not those of any foreigners.

This time he got it right. The noble struggle he said, rather than the polite struggle he told us last time. However, this popular movement business, he probably thinks he is addressing the party faithfull at Dikomo.

WHat the hell's a President of Turkish Cypriots? How can you be a president over people with no entity?

Because his people consider him to be their president?

ISTANBUL - Turkish Daily News

The president of Turkish Cyprus, is scheduled to address the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, or PACE, this week, a first for the leader of a country that is recognized only by Turkey.

One of the highlights of the fall session of PACE, to be held in Strasbourg, is the debate this week on the situation in Cyprus. Both Demetris Christofias, president of Greek Cyprus and Turkish Cypriot President Mehmet Ali Talat will address the general assembly, on successive days.

Although Talat is not recognized as president by the international community, Turkish diplomacy seems to have succeeded in securing equal treatment for Talat. His program in Strasbourg includes a meeting with the state secretary of Sweden, who holds the presidency of the committee of ministers the executive body of the Council of Europe, which is the oldest international organization working for European integration, and of which Turkey is a member.

Talat's program also includes a meeting with Secretary General Terry Davis and a dinner given in his honor by the president of PACE, Lluis Maria de Puig. After addressing PACE, Talat is also to meet the president of the European Court of Human Rights.

This is a positive move for the possibilities of some kind of Cyprus settlement. However, in the end, it will be determined by what is acceptable to Turkey on the one hand and RoC on the other hand.

Copperline,

I would like to congratulate you, thanks for confirming what I have always said. Turkey is doing the talking. Maybe you comrades will now take a leaf from your book and see the light. The TCs are a nobody and they are scamming us in pretending to NEGOTIATE a deal.

Thanks buddy, you made my day.

May I also pick you up on another matter, just for the record.

The president of Turkish Cyprus

There is no such thing as president and definately not Turkish Cyprus.

This was invented to try and get the international community to talk up the illegally held areas in hope of being recognised.

Just for the record.

Further, I would also be willing to bet that Mr Talat had the opportunity to speak at Mr X's grace. he would have had to give his permission for that to happen.

Yet another good will gesture on our part, but I don't see anything recpricated.

Anyway, just want to clear that up and thanks again.

I don't need any credible evidence as Copperline is credible enough in this instance.

He is our leader, and we are the Turkish Cypriots we elected him our President, so get off your high horse this situation will stay as is until you realize that there isnothing you can do about it and accept us as equal partners. Our President has just as much right to put accross the views of the TCs whos opinions are importnant and carry just as much at the GC state leader and GCs.
