Defence Ministry shrugs of hypermarket threats over parade
By Alexia Saoulli
THE Defence Ministry does not plan to lose any sleep over a Nicosia hypermarket’s threats to sue for loss of damages incurred by the October 1 military parade.
Orphanides Shopping Mall has announced it plans to remain closed tomorrow rather than open and not do any business. The hypermarket is claiming its hand is being forced due to the traditional National Guard parade on Iosif Hadjiosif Avenue, which leads directly to it.
Orphanides told the ministry in writing it “reserves its rights for the losses and damages it will suffer”.
The hypermarket made a similar complaint last year.
This year, Orphanides sent its letter through a lawyer with a veiled threat of legal action. The hypermarket claims shoppers will be unable to access the premises between 9am and 12.30pm. It also claims the mall’s staff will have to arrive long before 8am, which is before normal opening hours.
But a ministry source said the hypermarket was being over the top and that the ministry was unconcerned about its threats.
He said: “That route was chosen based on certain criteria and the ministry is not doing something that is out of the ordinary. All countries celebrate their national independence and this parade takes place just once a year so there really is no cause for such a commotion.
“In France they close off the Champs-Elysées and none of the boutiques complain and here Orphanides is making such a fuss? Or what about when heads of state visit a country and they close off roads? Do people complain then and threaten legal action to seek compensation for loss of damages? These things happen and are within reason. It’s not as if the parade is every day.”
The source said the ministry would not be changing the island’s celebratory customs just to suit the hypermarket. Apparently, Orphanides suggested the Defence Ministry change the parades’ route.
“They are just creating bad advertising for themselves. Instead of thinking that there will be parents who are coming to Nicosia from out of town to watch their sons in the parade and who might go to the mall when the parade is over, they are being short-sighted and saying they prefer to stay closed.”
Furthermore, October 1 was a public holiday and businesses and schools would remain closed, so it wasn’t as if this was a normal, busy day, he said.
“Besides, what about all the smaller shops a dotted along the route. Imagine if they all started to complain? Orphanides has to show some understanding. Besides, there is alternative access to the mall if you go round by the GSP stadium, but it’s not for us to act as their lawyers and to point that out.”
