Minister defends defence comments
DEFENCE Minister Costas Papacostas yesterday hit back at critics who slammed his comments on Monday that the 15-year old Joint Defence Dogma between Cyprus and Greece was defunct.

“I won’t take lessons of politics and patriotism from anyone,” said Papacostas yesterday in response to the attacks, primarily from coalition partner, DIKO, socialist EDEK and the European Party, which said his comments would make the public insecure.

DIKO said the Defence Minister “should be very careful and cautious when referring to defence matters”.

“We expect that the Minister of Defence be aware of this great responsibility, and will be particularly careful in the future,” it added.

Papacostas told state television on Monday that the pact with Greece was “just fireworks”.

Yesterday the minister said a serious and responsible government should refrain from slogans “aimed at garnering votes” when it came to matters of defence.

“We think the continuation of any public debate on defence issues during a period of negotiations is not appropriate,” he added.

Fooling themselves how? The common defence doctrine has been dead since the days when George Papandreou was foreign minister. There have not been joint exercises in years.
