Shipping of goods in cars

Postby psycho » Tue Sep 30, 2008 9:37 am

I know this has probably been covered millions of times before but my neighbour in Cyprus has asked me to ask if anyone knows whether there is any restriction on putting goods inside a car to be shipped back to the UK.

He only has a few small possessions that could be put in the boot and on the back seat of the car.

I would guess that as long as the goods are not flammable then it would probably be OK - Anyone have any comments/advice?

A friend of mine shipped his van back to the UK.

The shipping company told him he could include as much as he could cram into it.

If it is going in a container, no problem, but if it is going ro-ro anything decent could be nicked.

Sorry about that. Still stuck on double entry book-keeping.

Thanks for the advice, I shall pass on your comments. I'm sure he'll be putting the car in a container.
Good point about the stealing of goods if it goes on a ro ro, I wouldn't have thought of that.

We were told that we could put some of our belongings in our car By Columbia Movers as long as the rear screen was not obstructed.
Peter at M&S Shipping in the UK whinged about it.

Unless its shipped in a container forget about putting anything inside the car! My first import into Cyprus aboard the MV Leo Borchard was comphrensively looted of anything of any or little value and not by anyone in Cyprus as I was at the docks when the ship arrived with a relative who was a customs officer at Limassol. Other cars coming in had batteries/spare wheels/CD players stolen. While my car suffered no damage others had been pretty badly knocked around and many suffered damage to the roof where tie down lashing straps caused distortion.
Guess it wont be any different going the other way as these ships make stops in Greece Italy France and of course the final destination.

Tell your friend not to sign anything accepting delivery until he/she has inspected the vehicle on arrival. Once signed for all insurance claims are void and nothing inside the vehicle is covered by insurance anyway.
