Workers on strike at the illegal Tymbou airport were beaten

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

Workers on strike at the illegal Tymbou airport were beaten

Postby MicAtCyp » Sat May 14, 2005 6:33 pm

Under the banner front-page title "Here you are democracy" Turkish Cypriot daily KIBRIS newspaper (07.05.05) reports that the "police" of the occupation regime have beaten and dragged on the ground workers of the "Turkish Cypriot Airlines" who were on strike at the illegal Tymbou airport. Women have also been among the workers.
Members of the HAVA - Sen Trade Union were arrested because they entered the building of the "airport" during the strike.

The paper writes that charges have been filed against 178 persons. The lawyers of the trade union Savas Atakan and Suleyman Dolmaci are among these persons.

Meanwhile, under the banner front-page title "The Prime Minister as well does not know", Turkish Cypriot daily AFRIKA newspaper (08.05.05) reports that the so-called prime minister of the regime, Mr Ferdi Sabit Soyer, said he did not know by whose orders the "police" were sent to the illegal airport. The trade union asked Mr Soyer, the following: "You said that you did not know. Who gave the police the instruction to interfere? Does the person who gave the instruction not have to inform you?"

Responding to this question Mr Soyer said: "I have launched an investigation and I will find out".

**********************

Find out what Mr Soyer? That the pseudo pllice is under the command of the Turkish Army?

This is one of the most rare incidents ever occured in Northern Cyprus. The TRNC police is usually tolerant against the protestors. This is one case. Mic is that what you only have?

To be fair I think MicAtCyp's ppoint was not the frequency of events such of this but that the TRNC police is under the control of the Turkish Army and not the civilian government and the implication is that the Turkish Army orders police action without any regard for the civilan government here (hence Soyer the prime minster knowing nothing about the polic action). How true this is (Turkish military ordering police action with no regard for civilan politicans) I am not sure but it can not be denied (imo) that our police are under the command of the Turkish Military and they should not be.

Hey just becomming more European ;)

You should have seen the legaslative, legal and physical attacks Margaret Thatcher made against striking miners in the UK! We have much to learn before we get close to reaching such European levels of sophistication and democracy here in the North. Though this recent (and atypical) response is heading in the 'right' direction.

You guys love to exaggerate whatever happens in the north. Yes, this was wrong and yes, it's a problem that needs to be addressed. But strikes are very common in the north and they usually happen with no incidents. I know this from my brother-in-law. He's a teacher and teachers have numerous strikes every year with no problems whatsoever. But again it's much better to pick one incident and blow it out of proportion to make everything look so undemocratic and barbaric in the north.

At least we do not shoot our protestors to death, as the Italian police did 3 years ago. Oh oh I am sorry. Italy is in the EU. Whatever they do is democratic. Damn you barbaric, inhumane, mongolian Turks and Turkish Cypriots!!! hahahaha

178 people remember? If you improve by 2 every year, bingo.... it will just take you 89 years! Not bad ha?

As long as they are not GCs protesting at Dherynia, no you don't beat them to death, neither you shoot them on the head.

Instead of repeating curses, you better scratsch your head to understand why a lot of people call you like that. And I don't mean only Greeks or GCs but even Arabs at the depths of the Arabian Gulf hear the word "Turk" and their hair stings up when rememberig their sufferings under the Ottomans.

By the way I personally don't support those arguments especially for the majority of the TCs.
