THE EU is ready to invest €4 million in a solar energy project in the north as part of its aid programme for the Turkish Cypriot community.

The European Commission has started a project to build a pilot solar power plant for the Turkish Cypriot community that will deliver electricity to the grid in 2009. Experts are currently preparing a concept study to determine the best location and most efficient method of exploiting sunlight to produce electrical energy in the north.

The pilot power plant, which will generate a maximum 1MW of electricity, should be up and running by summer 2009, and is expected to produce over 1.5 million kWh per year.

The energy experts will discuss the opportunities and technologies available for Cyprus in renewable energies this Thursday at the EU Programme Support Office, 38-44 Kyrenia Avenue in Nicosia at 9am.

The two topics presented will be ‘The Global Energy (R)evolution’ and ‘Solar Power Generation - State of the Art and Prospects for Cyprus’.Both presentations will be followed by an open discussion. The event is open to all interested parties, subject to seating availability.

A SEMINAR WAS HELD RENEWABLE ENERGIES AS PART OF THE DEVELOPMENT OF ENERGY SECTOR IN NORTH CYPRUS

A seminar on solar energy and renewable energies was held at the EU Programme Support Office this morning.

Presentations were delivered on ‘The Global Energy Revolution’ and ‘Solar Power Generation-State of the Art and Prospects for Cyprus’.

The seminar was organized within the framework of the project started by the EU Commission which aims to build a pilot solar power plant in North Cyprus which is expected to generate by summer 2009.

Speaking about the project, which is funded under the EU Financial Aid Regulation for the Turkish Cypriot community, the Head of the EU Programme Support Office Alain Bothorel said 14 million Euros have been saved for the development of the energy sector in North Cyprus and the amount will now be used on investments for the use of solar energy.

Pointing to the increase in oil prices across the world, Mr Bothorel said with this development, the use of solar energy has been a popular technology and the aim is to make the use of solar energy system sustainable in North Cyprus.

Dr Fulcieri Maltini also made a presentation on energy problems of the world and alternatives to solve them.
