Cyprus National football team

Postby Big Al » Mon Sep 22, 2008 5:16 am

I seem to recall a number of GC's claiming that no TC footballer is good enough to play in the Cypriot national team (should the island be reunified)...
I pose this question to them......how many players in the current cypriot national team would you rate as better players than Colin Kazim Richards (Fenerbahce & Turkey) and Leon Osman (Everton). Please try and be as objective as possible. These two individuals are of TC heritage and both would be eligible to play for Cyprus (should an agreement be reached) or Turkey.

Although they would be very welcome in the national squad Christofi of Omonoia who is trying to decide between Juventus and the Premiership is far better, as is Aloneftis who played Bundesliga and Okkas who played Primera League this year. All would still be playing in these championships had it not been for omonoia offering them double money, houses, cars and a pension for life.

Not mentioning Konstantinou (Olympiakos Pireaus, Salonika) top Champions League scorer 2-3 years ago. Efrem who plays for Rangers and many many others.

However as i said Richards especially would be very welcome in the squad if he wants to apply. Tell him to give the Cyprus Football Association a call.

If I played for the national team could I be classified just as a Cypriot?

Actually, as it stands, yes. We have had armenian cypriots play, a serbian cypriot and a German naturised player in the past (Raufmann nice old fashioned cypriot name) All were simply classified as Cypriots.

Remember we never accepted the AP so these racist elements in our sport such as the one Bananiot fears are not applicable now.

So, why did I see you DT, behind the "Cyprus is Greek" banner of the APOEL supporters?

What does apoel have to do with the national team? Some fans of Lazio carry swastikas...does that make Italy a Nazi state?

BTW thats not where I sit and I know it was you holding that "trnc" flag in the omonia stands.
