TURKISH CYPRIOT FOOTBALL FEDERATION REFUSES MEMBERSHIP TO

GREEK CYPRIOT FOOTBALL ASSOCIATION

Nicosia, 17 September 08 (T.A.K.):-The Football Federation of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus has refused a membership to the Greek Cypriot Football Federation (CFA) a FIFA proposal, which would have broken the isolation imposed on Turkish Cypriots.

The federation has refused the membership to CFA on the grounds that it would have set a precedence so similar matters and effect the peace talks resumed by the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot leaders to settle de half century old Cyprus problem.

In the reply letter to FIFA, The Cyprus Turkish Football Federation (CTFF) the top authority regulating the football in the north proposed that a provisional common committee to be set to deal with international affairs in football.

The footballs governing body FIFA in July proposed TRNC the opportunity to have international games and finance to improve the game with a condition of becoming a member to CFA.

CTFF responded saying that Turkish Cypriot side was open to all alternative except becoming member to CTA.

The statement sent to FIFA said “Before a political settlement in Cyprus, (TRNC) we are open to al alternatives except becoming member to CFA”

It said that the formulation that should be developed must be suitable to a potential solution brokered between the two leaders.

Omer Adal the Chairman of the Cyprus Turkish football Federation said he believes their proposals would be taken into consideration

Adal said proposals made by FIFA had political implications and that they were prepared in line with the views of the Greek Cypriot side.

In the alternative formulations conveyed to FIFA Adal said they had proposed forming a provisional common committee to deal with international friendly, tournaments and development of the game formed with members from KTFF, KOP and FIFA of UEFA.

Cetinkaya- Cypriot Champions in the 1950's. Not bad for a team made up of the so called minority. Know your football, GC teams featured so called 'Ottomans' in their teams before the troubles. Also Altintop (Turkish international) had no problems scoring the fourth goal against Omonia in the UEFA Cup this week. 4-1 enough said!

Turkish Cypriots reject invitation to join Cyprus football league
TURKISH CYPRIOTS have turned down a proposal by UEFA and FIFA to join the Cyprus Football Association (KOP).

UEFA Treasurer Marios Lefkaritis said the Turkish Cypriots had ‘‘declined the proposal of FIFA and UEFA’’ for their ‘‘federation’’ to join KOP instead of separate Turkish Cypriot clubs to become members of KOP.

Lefkaritis clarified that the proposal of FIFA and UEFA had not originated from KOP but was the result of many meetings and discussions.

He said the counterproposal of the Turkish Cypriots to create a new smaller federation or administrative committee until the solution of the Cyprus problem was something ‘‘neither KOP nor FIFA can accept.’’

Speaking to the Cyprus News Agency, Lefkaritis said FIFA’s proposal was ‘‘a huge concession for KOP’’ since the Federation would have to make various adjustments and statutory amendments, taking into account that KOP’s general assembly comprises clubs.

Asked if the Turkish Cypriot football clubs could join KOP, Lefkaritis said they could but that there were procedures in place that they would have to follow.
