If there is unification:

What happens to the statues of Makarios (Wherever) and the statue of Attaturk in Girne???

How about EOKA day or any other celebration that goes against what the other side believes in????

Do we ban or grin and bare??????

Zan,

All I can suggest is that new national holidays be established. Those likely to inflame passions should not be officially marked.

Just trying to point out the impracticalities.......Anything Makarios...Gone....for example.......Makarios street...Gone

Anything Attaturk Gone...

No mention........

Turkish channels banned?????

Neighbors turning down radios and televisions in case something offensive is over heard. How many more of these instances of every day life will be hard to control...

Just asking.

Barnet names street after Morphou

Barnet names street after Morphou

BARNET Council in London has named one of its roads after the occupied town of Morphou.

A ceremony was held this week by the Mayor of the borough, John Marshall, in the presence of a number of VIPs, including the Mayor of Morphou, Charalambos Pittas and municipality councillors Ourania Peletie and Charilaos Charilaou.

The suggestion to name the street after Morphou, a twin town with Barnet, came in a motion from Councillor Andreas Tambourides and was passed without debate.

In the motion, the council noted "the strong links with Morphou since 1995, which extend not only to a formal twinning of the borough and the municipality but also through visits and solidarity such as the Morphou Rally every year."

It went on to say that the naming was in solidarity with the 36,000 Greeks and Cypriots living in the borough.

Well Zan for a start we show some political maturity and sensitivity to Greek Cypriots in the expectation they will also do so towards us. In practice this will mean that our feelings towards Ataturk ought to be respected in a spirit of national reconciliation. We will have to do likewise with regards to Makarios, as difficult as this may seem to us.

In a perfect world that would go without saying mehmet but how do we go about it practically....

Do we join in with the celebrations or stay at home whilst they get on with it. In mixed villages this would be unbearable. Also.....Would that be seen as being rude?

How is this being Cypriot...... :?

Well Zan, the path to peace and reconciliation is full of booby traps. You have to make a personal decision whether you want to act provocatively or with sensitivity to your neighbours. My family came from mixed villages, we celebrated each others special occasions, Christmas and Easter wasn't unbearable for us nor Ramadan for them. We all have to make a decision about our personal behaviour towards our neighbours. Being Cypriot I believe you would make the correct decision according to your conscience,

Anyway, since its done anyway..how about removing those flags? Every time i drive to Nicosia it spoils my view, disgusting... selfish and stupid.

Religion and the overall message of religion is one thing mehmet because it is a message of peace but what sort of message will be received in the case of Makarios or Attaturk.

Here is part of the map of Larnaca with the street names, have a look at it and tell me if you notice anything.

I would agree with some monuments and some names to be removed, for example Grivas in our case, but this doesn't mean we should erase from history everybody that some of you don't like.
