As far as Big Mak goes, I agree he's not in the same league as he is a Cypriot leader not a Turkish or Greek one however in danger of seeing Denktash busts everywhere after the fat f**k dies I vote to get rid of all busts of Makarios as well (I think there's 2 in the whole island.)

You can watch any TV channel you like, I know this is strange for Zan but after you unite with us you will no longer have to live in a police state as you do now. No more jail for graffiti, no jail for flying flags the "govt" doesn't agree with. It'll take some adjustment from you but you'll catch on to freedom quite quickly.

It is hard for me to watch you guys squirm like this......Hard but somehow enjoyable..... 8)

Latest news::::::

A GC man has been arrested for throwing a brick through the window of a local Barber shop owned by a Cypriot of Turkish decent. It is reported that the GC man was offended when he caught a glimpse of the television depicting scenes of the Turkish peace keeping force landing on Cyprus in 1974. When asked where he got the brick, the man said that he had noticed this station being shown before and had returned to watch the establishment to make sure it did not happen again. When he saw that it was happening again he used the brick that he brought with him to make his protest. The local authority said that the man should not have taken the law into his own hands and should have lodged a formal complaint. A spokes person for the AAAAT (Anti Attaturk And Anything Turkish) organisation commented that they had lodged a complaint two years ago on tis very subject and nothing had been done about it. Mr. Makarios Grivas, the spokesperson for the organisation, issued a statement that this sort of filth will not be tolerated and action will be taken against any shop that allows such images to be shown in Cyprus.

Mr Ercan, the shop owner gave us this comment. " I was just watching my favourite soap opera and the adverts came on and they showed a preview of a program that was to be shown that evening. I was not gong to watch it but I cannot control everything that is shown on the TV. This just isn't fair. The Police came and took my TV away. What is this world coming to".

The local authority said that the Government is looking into introducing heavy fines for cases like this and shop owners should be careful as to which station they tune into. "We are looking at ways of filtering out this type of viewing material" said a government official.

The GC man was let off with a caution and we are not allowed to print his name.

Isn't the question of whether something is Cypriot or foreign an important citerion? Makarios was a Cypriot, Ataturk was not, for example.

Even so, if Zan were to stroll around the old Turkish quarter of Limassol, his jaw may drop to see street names such as:

Ankara Street
Çanakkale Street
Celal Bayar Street
Beyazit Street
Edirne Street
İzmir Street

and many other such examples.

In other words, this is not a major issue.

Under thie BBF thingy there will be a large degree of autonomy so each side, but also each local authority under EU subsidiarity rules, will put up things like statues, and choose street names etc.

But judging by what is going on NOW, as Tim pointed out above, the south has less concern with changing names etc than the north. After decades of conflict the Turkish named landmarks in southern Nicosia are still known by their original names.

I recall when I was living in the German FEDERAL Republic in the eighties that each "Land" had its own public holidays, so that people might be on holiday in Bavaria on the same day as people in Hessen had to work. The same principle could apply in a federal Cyprus, so I don't think public holidays need be an issue.
