Clio 1.5-is it worth bringing it over?

Postby flavell5 » Thu Sep 18, 2008 12:21 pm

Hi, I wonder if anyone can give me a bit of advice. I have just changed my car here in the UK but still have my paid for Clio 1.5 diesel that is two and half years old. I needed a bigger car here for bikes etc... We have bought an apartment in Peyia that we plan on visiting three or four times a year for a few weeks at a time. There is undercover parking there. Would it be worth bringing my car over for us to use (I still love my Clio) instead of selling it here. It would sell here for around £8000 privately as high spec so may not be worth it in long run... Someone told me that second hand cars are very expensive in Cyprus  Or would it be cheaper to hire each time?

If we do bring it we would have a container as things seem very expensive in Cyprus!

Many Thanks

Claire

Do yourself a favour leave your car in uk or sell it you will not like the hassle of shipping a car over here, and believe me you will pay duty on bringing it into the country etc and you will have to get it registered etc ,etc SELL IT and by cheap run around if your not planning to live here

We brought over our Ford Mondeo two years ago. We shipped it Ro-Ro for £500. It arrived safe and sound, we got a yellow permit from Customs and drove it from the docks with no trouble at all. Two years passed and we kept restamping the yellow form every three months through a car agent. We became confident enough to take it back to UK for a few months and bring it to Cyprus again.

Meantime, Nicosia customs invited us to register it permanently. We got a letter saying we did not have to pay any import tax unless we wanted to sell it or even give it away. This was some 3800 Euros which is very considerable. That will be your choice. If you stay and use it just for yourself, there is nothing to pay, but you cannot sell it or pass it on here (or even I think export it) without paying this duty.

If you move here permanently and can prove it, you do not pay duty. You will have to pay registration fees which can be quite steep if you have a vehicle with a big engine or it is a 4x4.

Go to www.mof.gov.cy and follow the links to the Customs Dept., it is all there.

I brought over a Yaris 3 years ago, having bought another car in the UK. IMHO it was definitely worth it. The duty on small engined newish cars is not that expensive.

Here is my Image

If you use the search engine you will find there are thousands of posts on this subject already...

Theoretically now Cyprus is in the EU you can bring a car in, pay a registration fee and bish-bosh a few months later you have your car on Cypriot plates.

There are plenty of post on here from people that have done just that.

However, there are also plenty of people who have found for whatever reason that it isn't that easy. A mate of mine for instance had his car and motorbike impounded and ended up paying an agent, a back-hander to an official and a pile of duty before he could get them back...

Do you really want to risk spending your first six months here back and forth to customs officials trying to get your car released and registered...?

My personal opinion is that it would be better to sell it there, come over with the cash in your pocket and pick up a new motor here. After all, if it is worth £8K why have it sitting in a garage in Cyprus when you could get a runabout to save you hiring fees for a few hundred?

Flavell5 I am sorry if someone said it above...but I read only your post since I dont have much time....you can get brand new clio in Cyprus less that you are thinking to sell yours in Uk....give up with that one..sell it there and come and get another one in Cyprus...and it will save you the expenses to bring it here.

I have an official letter from Customs Nicosia to say I don't have to pay duty if I live here and the car is for my own use, but I do have to pay if I sell it here. Honestly, it seems to me that the law is wonky and variable according to what officials you come into contact with. How else can we have such varying tales?
