Forgive me if im wrong but if you retire here you dont have to pay duty but if you sell it later you will be liable for the duty, I live in Cyprus and have done for nearly three years and I had to pay duty on my motorbike and im not retired, so unliess Flavell 5 is retiring you will pay duty,

I am not retired and recently returned from a few years in the UK. I brought 2 cars over, on for me and one for the Mrs. I didn't have to pay any duty as it had already been paid in the UK. I just paid registration fees. I can sell them any time I like.

This is getting boreing now to put this to bed quote from goverment website.

Quote. under the conditions laid down you are entitled to relief from excise if you are an alien national taking permanent residence in Cyprus without exercising any profession or occupation of any sort . Now is that sorted now.

Okay that is in black and white. I am retired and I do not have to pay import duty, and as I said, I do have a letter from Nicosia which confirms that. This letter also clearly states that should I sell it here, then the duty becomes payable.

However, I am still a bit confused as to what is best to do now that we have decided to sell up and go. Can we just ship the car back to UK without paying any import duty? I hope you can find something official I can point to on this, because I just don't trust what port officials say. They differ from person to person.

Decided not return to this thread again after this posting. As an advanced member, perhaps you should be more tolerant or even polite towards other contributors. Sorry if the subject is boring or exasperates you by now, but it is perhaps new to others.
