And here is another story, this time by
Neshe Yahsin....
It was years ago,in the dark days when there was only minimum contact withween the GC and TCs...Neshe was one of the few prominent TCs who lived and worked in the ROC...One day she was invited (for the first time) to give a speech to the students at
the American Academy in Larnaca...
When she got there, the teacher who invited her,
Nikos Anastasiou, met her at the gate in an agitated state...
It might be better to cancel,he said. The atmosphere is very tense...One student even threatened to shoot you...
Nonsense, said Neshe, and walked into a packed school hall...
Hundreds of eyes were on me,she narrated. They were visibly shocked as they were expecting
a monster,and here I was,a skinny,shy,childlike woman...
After reading a poem she began :
"When I was your age we had history lessons at school...As I am sure you do now...We learnt about Cyprus history, but it was very different to what they are teaching you here...So I don't know what is the truth any more...But I know about my own life story... if you are interested"...
She then tells them about the 63 events, how she was scared for her life...How she became a refuge and how she felt , after the 74 events, on her first night in a house deserted by the GCs etc...After the speech there were a lot of questions from the students...Neshe still remembered one of them...
"If there was war tomorrow between Cyprus and Turkey, which side would you be on??? Her answer?
"On the side of the Cypriot and Turkish peacelovers!"...
