VERY IMPORTANT FOR EX-PATS WHO WANT TO VOTE:
No doubt some ex-pats have wanted to be listed on the electoral roll to vote at municipal elections. You will have been told that you must first get a Cyprus ID. My advice is DO NOT APPLY FOR A CYPRUS ID at this time. I have been arguing this matter with the powers that be and after 2 1/2 years I have finally got a written response from European Commission in Brussels. As I expected, they say: the condition of EU citizens requiring first a Cyprus passport seems to be contrary to the EC directive 2004/38/EC.
I expect in a few weeks (or months) you will need only your own passport and residence permit to enroll.[/u][/b]

I have applied and received a Cyprus ID. It is a very convenient form of identity to carry around and I don't see what the big deal is.

A Cyprus ID card is different from a Cyprus passport.

If you lived in the Larnaca district, Tim, you would find the application for a Cyprus ID is made difficult by the staff insisting you present your birth certificate which must show your father's name. This usually means sending off documents (and money, of course) to Caxton House to get a new birth certificate before you can even apply for a Cyprus ID. Many ex-pats don't want the hassle of this and therefore don't vote. In future there will be no hassle. I also think it is a good thing to put the legal situation here straight. Incidentally, as proof of identity here I use a credit card sized European driving license which is accepted everywhere as an ID (and possibly because I got mine in Germany it NEVER expires).

Yes, I had to apply for a full birth certificate. Been there, done that. I still find it handy to have a universally accepted ID card now that I have gone through all that hastle.

You mean "RoC" card don't you..... Can be used in the TRNC for verifying passports on entry!!!!!!
