It's the place you guys like to go via Ercan. I counted 9 GC cars in just one parking line.

"His Church should not lose its independence but his Country could...
Can anyone tell me if the Cyprus Church comes under the Partiarch in Istanbul?????"

I am no theologian but as I know the system the Patriarch is first among equals, so he is the ranking patriarch among all others. So Cyprus is under the Patriarch but autonomous as a church since Byzantine times.

Copperline,

I tried several times to start a thread on the class aspects of the conflict, but seems that most people in the forum do not regard the class aspect as important or relevant.

A quick look at the background of most EOKA fighters is telling though. You do not see many offspring of the rich and privilieged in the ranks. Mind you, after the end of hostilities, many came forth wearing berets with EOKA embroidered on them, a uniform which the EOKA fighters never wore. It does not take a high IQ to understand that an underground movement would not wear any distinguishing clothes.

Thanks,Nikitas.
But I wonder how "autonomous" a church can be if they do come under the Patriarch??? How autonomous is the Catholic church in Australia from the Vatican, for example??? Is the autonomy just on paper???

I think the autonomy revolves around the election of the Archbishop, his administrative area, etc. In Cyprus the Archbishop is chosen locally with no input from the Patriarch. On matters of doctrine it is the Synod of patriarchs who decide and that is binding on all the church, pretty much like the Catholics.

There is a low grade debate in the Orthodox church regarding the primacy of the Patriarch in Istanbul. So far there has been tacit acceptance of his primacy, but the Russians are beginning to question this tradition. The dilemma in turn leads to the question whether Turkey would want the Patriarch of Istanbul to lose his ecumenical position even if they do not accept it. It would sort of diminish the appeal of the city to its most important tourists, the mainland Greeks. It is not so good for the overall image of the city either.
