EOKA...

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

Postby utu » Sat Sep 13, 2008 3:55 am

The thing about armed resistance movements is that people who are members of such groups have a simple maxim: if you are not for us, you are against us. That is why Greek Cypriots who did not care for a lot of what EOKA did kept quite and also why Turkish Cypriots who did not care for a lot of what TMT did also kept their mouths shut: to avoid being targeted as 'traitors'. This fact really does need to be kept in mind by the contributors in this thread...

Utu,
You've nuked the centre of the target bang on! Those who say that both EOKA & TMT were heroes are a bunch of wankers!

The African National Congress's fight against apartheid was a legitimate armed struggle,as their target was South African government institutions, not ordinary South Africans. There's no comparison between EOKA & the A.N.C. at all.

Hindsight is a great thing as going back to read again the views of the protagonists. Those with enough sense to warn that the armed struggle would lead us to calamity were targetted by the thugs of EOKA, who later started fighting among themselves for the share of the spoils (cushy government positions). Hence, the list of Cypriots murdered by EOKA is far longer than the list of British soldiers that went down.

Even Klerides, who represented legally all EOKA members that were arrested (and was EOKA member himself), accepted that the armed struggle was a huge mistake (My Depostion, vol. 1).

Bananiot,
Are you referring to former President Glafkos Clerides, who was President of the Cypriot Senate in 1974?

Yes, absolutely, he is the man. Still alive, by the way. A very wise man.

Replying to the post about Washington as guerilla leader Zan wrote : "What a load of gobledegook.....The Nazis also tried to make their country great....As a side issue...They killed six Million Jews...Long live the Third Reich "

Are you saying George Washington was a Nazi?

Bananiot,
It was very good of former President Clerides to admit that he was misguided in joining EOKA,& had the courage to say so.

It's a shame that none of the Maori Nationalist scumbags who illegally occupied Moutoa Gardens in Wanganui back in 1995 have either admitted that their occupation was wrong,or made any amends to repair the gardens, which they wilfully damaged.

I've never had any apology from the slapper who threatened to have me done over by her gang member pals at that time either.

The first declaration made by EOKA, distributed in April 1955.

EOKA ANNOUNCEMENT

With God’s help, with faith in the righteousness of our struggle, with the aid of all Hellenism

WE HEREBY TAKE ON THE STRUGGLE TO RID US (Cyprus) OF THE BRITISH YOKE.

With the sacred motto left upon us by our ancestors "EITHER WITH IT, OR ON IT"

CYPRIOT BROTHERS, From the depths of the centuries we are watched by all those who shone upon Greek history to maintain our freedom, those who fought in Marathon, in Salamis, the 300 of Leonidas and those who more recently fought in the Albanian epoch. We are watched by the fighters of ‘21, who taught us that liberation from an occupier always comes through BLOOD. We are also watched by the rest of Hellenism with anticipation, but also with national pride.

Let us respond with deeds, that we “will better” them.

The time has come to show the world that if international diplomacy is UNFAIR and PUSILLANIMOUS, the Cypriot psyche is brave and if the powers that be do not want to grant us our freedom, we will claim it with our own HANDS AND BLOOD.

Let us show the world once more that a Greek’s neck will not tolerate the yoke. The struggle will be hard; the occupier has the means and the numbers.

However, we have the SOUL, and JUSTICE on our side. And that is why we shall be VICTORIOUS.

GOBAL ENVOYS,

Take a look at your own actions. It is a disgrace in the 20th century for a nation to have to shed blood to gain its freedom, the holy gift for which we fought on your side and for which you yourselves claim to have fought against Nazism and Fascism.

HELLENES,

Wherever you are, hear our voice:

GO FORTH, ALL UNITED FOR THE LIBERATION OF OUR CYPRUS…..

E.O.K.A.

THE COMMANDER

D I G E N I S

Sorry , the list is in Greek.

How can a liberation struggle like the eoka people claim, killed more of their own people ( both GC and TC) rather than english soldiers.
An organisation of 20 000 fighters killed almost 60 english soldiers.
Thats about 0.003 english soldier per fighter :D

Also those who fought , later on became ministers, and got key positions in the goverment for their so called efforts ( more like a position fight rather than a liberal fight).
Also many of the members of eoka a, created eoka b, which we all know their actions.

I will make a comment about one of these civilians. ΜΟΡΦΙΤΗΣ ΓΕΩΡΓΙΟΣ was known to my family. In fact he lived in the same street as my family, just 2 or 3 doors down. My mother (she was a child) told me that everyone in the street did not even want to be seen talking to him because there were numerous rumours about his collaboration with the British. It was said that he played a role in the capture of EOKA members.

The EOKA campaign was a war against the British for self determination. Anyone who was seen as collaborating with the British were regarded as treasonous to the cause. EOKA acted accordingly and treated individuals accused of "High Treason" as it saw fit under the circumstances.

I can not comment about anyone else as I do not know as to the reasons why they were killed. I presume it would be because they too were seen to betray the EOKA movement by collaborating with the enemy.

Rafaella,
That goes to prove that E.O.K.A. were promoting & fighting for the braindead idea that is Enosis.

The chance of Enosis happening today is as much chance as the Lake of Fire in Hell freezing over,or a Protestant becoming Pope of Rome - NO CHANCE!
